I'm setting up my work room in a new house and I'm ready to build a work bench.

I've got plenty of room (could accommodate a 10 X 10 right angle bench)

I've decided to not include drawers but probably a lower shelf and some upper storage and peg board.

With all of the craftsmen here I'm sure there are a plethora of tips and suggestions for a solid functional work bench.


Pictures would be appreciated.

simple - 8 feet long - the top is 2 inch ash - very solid - the legs and stretchers are dimension lumber 4x4 legs 2x6 stretchers

the joints are mortised - and a shelf can be added on top of the stretchers

I have mine made out of 2x4 frames on 4x4 legs. Wth a double 3/4" ply top. The back doesn't have legs but is bolted directly to the wall into the studs. The bench doesn't wiggle when I use it. But it can't be easily moved to another spot.
 
I made mine with casters that flip up. I can use it to move stuff around, or have it sitting rock solid on the floor.
 
I personally like drawers...LOTS OF drawers. It's amazing how much "stuff" can be stored, (hidden), in the drawers.


Other than that, a sacrificial, read "replaceable" top is awfully nice.


Also, make it the right height for comfort and health. The proverbial "they" recommend standing straight up with your arms down along your sides. Take one forearm and hold it straight out 90 degrees, or parallel to the floor. Measure down from your elbow, your table top should be 8-9" below your elbow.

drawers are nice- obviously the old "gentlemen's bench" had them - this is retired to light use and assembly activities

you can never have enough drawers - notice the old machinist chest on top (more drawers) - there is another chest plus a small set of library drawers now

John, best of luck with your new work shop that you are in process of planning. One of the things I have always enjoyed about this site is the wealth of knowledge of others and their willingness to share.

the antique bench?- yeah- in fact that is what the antique shops are selling them for- as sideboards and kitchen islands

they date from the late 1800 to early 1900's made for the man with time and money to spend on a hobby

I found this one in a shop I visit often, he had a possible buyer who was going to use it in the house, i convinced him it deserved to be in a shop.
