Never thought I'd be posting this but......I carved a Mallard for a buddy of mine who resides down in LA. His wife now has requested (and I can't believe I am saying this) that I carve her a Sea Gull.....beach rat.....however they are good friends and I told her if I could come up with a pattern I would give it a try.
Soooooooo any one out there have a life size decoy pattern? If so would love to hear from you. Would be willing to pay for any mail and tracing expenses.
Thanks to every one who might reply.

I have seen them posted, you might want to do a search.
Also check the other forums: Carvers Corner, etc..

Standing, flying, or Decoy? I have Ringbill Gull patterns somewhere... In the process of redoing and Organizing my shop, and have not yet gotten to the boxes of patterns.

Parking lots, fields, lakes full of them now, migration is ON. Every Wal-Mart has lots of gulls in the parking lot. Get close and get a photo of life size. I did a slat/canvas one a few months ago for my rig, but it is oversize.

Decide what gull you want to carve, and someone here will supply a pattern for you, if not many. A very good group of folks willing to help.

Here is what I have - a "confidence decoy" I made in 1981. I will mail you a copy of the pattern if it's what you're looking for. The body of this Herring Gull is 16.5 LOA with a beam of 7 inches.

BTW: I made this pattern from a slide I took back in the day. Then, I used to project the image onto a piece of paper taped to the wall. The paper had the LOA marked on it. Nowadays, I make some patterns by searching Google Images for the species I want. If I find a posture I like, I copy it. I then either draw it the size I want - or scale it up on any copier that has an enlarging function (Staples, Fedex, etc).

Hope this helps,

SJS

Steve and all the others who replied,

Thank you so much for the help. Knew I would find the assistance I needed on this site. When Pat Gregory, Tim Speight and Jim Williams told me about DUCKBOATS I was overwhelmed with the vast amount of knowledge and information being shared here. So thanks to everyone who actively participates and freely share their love of the hobby.. Steve, I will PM you my address. Thanks again!

Steve - that's a mighty fine gull decoy. Can't imagine a big water rig without one. Check out Thomas Aquinas Daly's website, and his painting of his "beloved gull decoy", Wooden Birds and Blue Magic.
Gull and coot decoys have always drawn my eye, as well as birds.

It's always the buddies wife... :)

Nice work guys! It's the reason Dave mentions that I continue to come here... The Lord's blessings to all of you for your helpful and generous spirits.... Pat

Vince~

I'm glad you enjoyed that bird. I have often thought how we tend to ignore the beauty in some of our commoner birds (and many other things). In my experience, it always pays to stop and view gulls (and Blue Jays et etera) with a fresh set of eyes - their immaculate plumage patterns are always "just right".

And thanks, too, for sending me to Daly's site - I have always admired his work and it was a real treat to see so much of his stuff in one spot.

All the best,

SJS
