So tomorrow ends the 2019 duck season for me. I had thought it ended over a week ago with the freeze up but warmer weather and windy conditions have opened up a couple places where I hunt. Tomorrow I'll post a recap of the season and the biggest highlight for me - one I can cross one of my bucket list. Stay tuned.
I was out today alone in the slough. I had three ducks in the boat and was hoping a fourth would find its way to me. I had been sitting for about 1.5 hours without seeing anything even remotely close. It was nearing the time I wanted to call it a day when I heard a quack behind me and on the other side of the trees. I looked that way and could see a lone drake making its way towards my decoys. He was having a tough time as the wind had really picked up since the early hours. He started veering away and I softly quacked a couple of times to get his attention. He turned back and was coming right in. Just as I was about to stand up, I heard all sorts of quaking coming from somewhere. I'm looking around to see what was going on. Anyway, I stand up and shoot the duck and it falls a short distance from me. Quacking is still going on - what the heck?. It was at this time I realized I had not turned off my cell phone ringer which happens to be a duck quacking. Am I guilty of using an electronic calling device? Kidding, kidding......
Thought it was kind of funny when I realized what was going on.
Packed it up and headed home. Will be out for the last day tomorrow weather permitting. We are expecting a big storm starting tomorrow and going into Wednesday. Hope this isn't the case as I have a 5.5 hour drive to SD Wednesday around noon.
