Need a ruling - funny story

So tomorrow ends the 2019 duck season for me. I had thought it ended over a week ago with the freeze up but warmer weather and windy conditions have opened up a couple places where I hunt. Tomorrow I'll post a recap of the season and the biggest highlight for me - one I can cross one of my bucket list. Stay tuned.

I was out today alone in the slough. I had three ducks in the boat and was hoping a fourth would find its way to me. I had been sitting for about 1.5 hours without seeing anything even remotely close. It was nearing the time I wanted to call it a day when I heard a quack behind me and on the other side of the trees. I looked that way and could see a lone drake making its way towards my decoys. He was having a tough time as the wind had really picked up since the early hours. He started veering away and I softly quacked a couple of times to get his attention. He turned back and was coming right in. Just as I was about to stand up, I heard all sorts of quaking coming from somewhere. I'm looking around to see what was going on. Anyway, I stand up and shoot the duck and it falls a short distance from me. Quacking is still going on - what the heck?. It was at this time I realized I had not turned off my cell phone ringer which happens to be a duck quacking. Am I guilty of using an electronic calling device? Kidding, kidding......

Thought it was kind of funny when I realized what was going on.

Packed it up and headed home. Will be out for the last day tomorrow weather permitting. We are expecting a big storm starting tomorrow and going into Wednesday. Hope this isn't the case as I have a 5.5 hour drive to SD Wednesday around noon.

I'm calling the DNR.[ninja][ninja]

DNR = Do not Report right?

Hope your hunt got a little better this morning. Day got away from me with the list the wifey has provided for me to get done prior to leaving Wednesday. I'll give you a call tomorrow morning.

Mark,

If the rest of my season matches the action from today, I will be able to finish out the season on the same three shells that were in my gun today. [frown]

funny

i have the same ring tone and once looked for the duck coming in when it was in fact only my phone muffled inside my waders

How long do ya think it will take before a hunter does get a ticket for that?

My old gunning partner, that no longer hunts ducks, has that ringtone on his phone for when I call.

i should add that I switched to the duck ring tone because, with my hearing, i could never tell if the standard ring sound was my phone or someone else's nearby

so I browsed through the available tones, found the duck one and figure - problem solved

the next day we were in a store and i heard the duck and pulled the phone out of my pocket- no call

a second later this very old lady a few feet away dug her phone out and answered it [smile]

so much for being unique

Mark, I kinda wondered the same thing for turkey season. I thought hmmmmmmmmmmmmm maybe I could sit here and text with someone and every time someone texts me, the text tone is a turkey gobbling.

Probably save myself a lot of trouble since I have spotty cell service in the turkey woods

Mark, I like your tenacity when it comes to going after Mr. Quack. Congratulations on being able to take 3 ducks for this time of the year. The only way you could Try and prove the story about the cell phone ringer is if the ringer had been turned off. I am betting that someone could also tell a gamewarden exactly what time it was turned off if the question ever came up.

Have fun.

man, you must be way up north to be hanging it up at the beginning of december.

I remember around thanksgiving, we'd get a big push of birds from way up north.
the freighttrain wind will rush the cottonwoods will be stripped bare
the barometer will drop out entirely

the new season template in the western zone of upstate NY has an early first split that ends early November - the second split just opened this past weekend along with a strong cold front and day time temps at freezing or below- we are frozen out of the marsh for now. only the guys with big water rigs will be hunting
