Hello everyone, I've recently been thinking about building a light-weight fiberglass "poke boat" like the one below. This will be my first fiberglass project and I have no idea where to start and really need some help!!
Should I construct a wooden or foam mold then fiberglass over that? Materials, estimated cost, tips, etc.. Any feedback or suggestions will be greatly appreciated! http://duckboats.net.nmsrv.com/specs/images/pokeboat.gif

Would the green floral foam/stryofoam board be sufficient for my mold? If i wrap in masking tape and packing tape?

Get the book in the above post.

Using foam as a mould typically results in destroying the mould when getting the glass off. That is a lot of work, and if you mess up the release agent you then have to clean out foam stuck to the glass.

The poke boat is a two part boat. You may have seen some guys making surf kayaks by moulding them on a carved foam block and then using acetone to melt the foam out of the body to create a one piece kayak. Don't do that. You create way too much hazardous waste with melted goo, and it can weaken your glass job.

Take a look at svensons.com/boat/, they have free older boat plans that you could change to stitch & glue construction. Also, dngoodchild.com has some older plans cheap and a photo gallery of boats build from plans. It may be better than spending time mold making.
