Need Help with Blue Wing Teal Drake Color

Preface: Using Acrylics

What color is the appropriate to use for the Blue-Gray tint of the American Blue Wing Teal Drake? This is probably a no-brainer: BLUE GRAY of course! Do any acrylics manufacturers make the exact or what colors are blended to reach the proper tint. I don't have to be exact but the right direction would be helpful...These are gunners and don't ever expect a ribbon from them in the pool...Only food on the table during the season.

I noticed some carvers also paint the whole back from tail to the nape of the bird black. Are there any discretions on what is favored?

Kristan

Decoart Traditions Blue-Grey looks really good.

Also paint the back how you see fit.

Kristan,

When I was painting a hen GE, I thought black and white would make grey. Guess what, it makes blue! But more like a slate-blue with a lot of grey undertones. It may work as a starting point for your teal. You could always add in some blue paint if it's too grey. Just try it and you'll learn! Remember this grasshopper:) "Paint is cheap, experience is priceless."

Kristan there was a thread not long ago covering that exact topic. I learned to do them using titanium white and carbon black. Play around with it you might be surprised

Yep,
I was the one asking the question. I mix titanium white, carbon (lamp) black, and then I also use some raw umber in it to warm it up. takes a little blue out of it and adds more grey back.

I ended up paint those birds tonight with some advice received by all I played with all the colors and found a color I liked. Each holds its own light differently and the next birds I get done I will paint with slightly different tints of each of the colors you guys described. For some reason I am unable to post once I upload my photo.

Regards,
Kristan
