Need Opinions

Here's the scoop: I walk in from work, the wife says "some guy called, he wants to come look at your duckboat." I don't have any for sale, so I was a bit puzzled? I ask her about the call she says" he got your # from the guy that made your boat." Apparently the manufacturer of my duckboat(I'll spare his name) gave a stranger my phone # and told him I owned the model boat he was looking to buy and if he called me, I'd let him come and see it. Is this a little messed up, or am I over reacting??? A phone call from the manufacturer would've been appropriate first, I think. What really bothers me about it is, I bought the boat used and the only reason the maker knows I have it is because the previous owner told him. I did buy another boat, new from the manufacturer, but it was a different model than the one the stranger wants to come see. Should I contact the manufacturer and confront him about this? It's not like I entered into any type of agreement to be a dealer or showroom for this guy? Need a little feedback friends, thanks.

It is exactly this type of thing that justifies my unlisted phone number.

I don't know about where you live but up here that is a serious violation of federal privacy laws.

Call the manufacturer and have a polite but firm chat.

I would be upset too! A courtesy call is required for references. I run my own business and many of my customers like to get references and see my work from previous customers before commiting. I would NEVER give out a customers # or address without their permission. Better let them know now before it happens again..............................Kevin

I would call the mfg as well - They should not be providing your personal information without your consent.

Federal Privacy Laws??? Maybe in Canada but not here in the US. Just google someone's name and see all the information that you can find out about them for a small fee. Here in NJ we have OPRA. No..it's not who you think it is. It's the open public records act. You can get some pretty personal info on people but the police department does restrict what individuals can access it.

Just show up at his shop with a few buddies and a couple of cases of beer. Tell him you didn't think he would mind you having a little throw down seeing how ya'll are so familiar and all. Also tell him his wife (girlfriend) is on the way to party...again you didn't think he would mind.
In the immortal words of Gus McCall, "I will not tolerate rude behavior in a man"..........

I got a better idea. Call him up and tell him someone stole both your boats. Tell him that after speaking with your wife you believe that his providing an unknown stranger your information was instrumental in facilitating the theft. Tell him your attorney should be in touch real soon.........

Travis....makes sense, I'm sure the guy looking to see the boat is on the level and maybe we will hunt together, wouldn't be the first time I've teamed up with a fella I just met. Mike, know what you mean.Try getting your personal info removed from one of those sites too, it's a nightmare. Check out www.zabasearch.com you can find anyone, almost. Robert, I like the way you think, thanks for the laugh. I'm going to contact the manufacturer and discuss the issue. Hope what's left of your duck season is filled with many birds flying!!! I'll update everyone soon!

Robert, I like the way you think. Nothing like giving someone a little panic to start their day.

I'm actually looking for some accessories for the boat and I'm hoping that the maker will provide them "on the arm" if you know what I mean!!!!
The stranger is coming by weds to see the boat so I've got a couple days to broker a deal with the maker. Let you all know how it works out!!

If it were me, I would call the guy who called you. Ask him where he got his info. Sometimes things are not always as they appear.

Depending on what he tells you, you may or may not feel like contacting the guy who gave him your number.

The manufacturer may have no idea this has happened. I need more into in order to tell. There could be others involved here as well.

Dave E,
the fella that called to see my boat stated he got my number from the maker of the boat, no question about it. I just thought it was a little out of line for the manufacturer to give out my number without asking me first. If the manufacturer would've called first and said "I've got a guy looking to purchase the model boat you have, can he come take a look at yours?", I'm sure I would've said no problem, give me his # and I'll call him. I still haven't been in touch with the manufacturer but the fella is coming to look at my boat. I'll finish up the post after I talk to both of them!!! Thanks again to everyone for the advice. Hope you all had a good season...........Chris

I guess I'm the odd man out on this one. As a retriever training nut and Golden Retriever guy, I get calls all the time from people who have been given my number by some third party who may or may not know me, but knows I'm heavily involved in this sport. I'm always happy to talk dogs, dog training and hunting even to total strangers. I've even received a few calls from folks interested in building a duck boat and they heard about me from our local lumber store or something. Same thing, always happy to talk about that sort of thing. Now I absolutely hate soliciting calls and brusquely ask them to take me off their list.

If I was the guy that built your boat I probably would be surprised to find out you were put out by that, I'm sure he didn't mean any harm.

John, I see where you are coming from. We all field calls from friends of friends or even total strangers on various levels in this sport be it on dogs, boats, decoys, trip planning, etc.. This is not that situation, though. To my eye, this builder is using this guy as a salesman and counting on him to show the boat. The builder is working for profit and the boat owner has already paid him. He should at least call and ask if it is okay to offer his boat up. On the extreme end, some builders offer people money off their boat purchase if they will be a local contact or professional representatives to show the boat if there is not an intact dealer network.

Yeah, I agree with you there Tod. He should have called first, if the guy really likes his boat, I'm sure he would be happy to talk about it.
