I am a fairly decent carver but a mediocre painter. I have carved a few mallard hens but am looking for a really simple mallard hen paint scheme.

All of the examples I have seen are far too complicated for my skill sets. I would appreciate if any decoy carvers out there could share pictures of any really simple mallard hen paint schemes. This would be a great help to me

Good morning~

Last fall, I did a step-by-step Tutorial for re-painting Bean's Coastal Mallards (and Black Ducks) - both here (see Main Dex - Carver's Corner: http://www.duckboats.net/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=252449;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#unread ) and on my website: http://stevenjaysanford.com/re-painting-l-l-bean-coastal-blacks-and-mallards/

Here is the finished product:

Hope this helps!

Steve's decoys are gorgeous, and far simpler than many paint schemes you'll see. Still, for someone like me (who literally spent middle school and high school scheming to get to graduation without having to take an art course), any kind of painting is intimidating.

My solution--when my decoys need repainting, they become black ducks. (Kidding, but only a little.) Mallards decoy to black decoys just fine up here, where we're mostly hunting over a 50/50 mix of the two in the early season, and increasing proportions of black ducks as the season gets later.

If I remember right, Steve has a black duck decoy painting tutorial, too.

Great examples so far. The first instructions I read that I could follow when I started painting were in the book "Making decoys the century old way". http://www.amazon.com/Making-Decoys-The-Century-Old-Way/dp/0870335790

Its oil painting and not a system I use at all anymore but it was simple to follow and made for some good gunners I still use to this day.
