need some advice on outboards

i intend to purchase a duckboat for next season and i just happened to come across a 1988 25 hp mercury short shaft motor with low hours . the owner wants $400. for it which seems like a good price. my question is if i decide to buy a boat that requires a long shaft am i going to have a problem unloading this motor. i don't have any idea what the market is like for short shaft motors. any comments would be appreciated.
 
Take a compression gauge and check it out. If it has good compression in both cylinders and they are within 10 pounds of each other..jump on it like a lab on bacon. For that kind of money you can get a longshaft conversion kit and still be beating the price game.....by hundreds of dollars.

Sounds like a deal even though it is a Merc. LOL yukyuk. Short shaft motors are more useable for the kind of boats we use. As long as it runs good buy it.Good luck.
 
If the motor runs and runs well, you'd be able to sell it for twice that around here.

ditto! Probably 3x that in the Spring around here. Worst case, you get a boat and need a long shaft. You can sell this one, buy a long shaft and probably still come out ahead.
 
Most of the boats you'll be looking at for duck hunting will probably take a short shaft anyway.
