Need some help planning a trip

Would like to plan an out of state trip with my dog, who is going on 9 years old-so this may be his last trip with me.
Went several years ago to South Dakota and had a great time, but this will be a solo trip for me and it is a long ways to go.
Would you have any suggestions as to areas to look into that would not be so far? Willing to travel 15 or 20 hours from the coast of North Carolina.
Looking for areas that we would not need a boat and has public access or pay for access to private land.

Thanks,

Kirk

You should start getting information about the states in the mid-south or the lower midwest. Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas and maybe Oklahoma. You mentioned not having a boat so that would probably rule out Louisiana. I know that Illinois. Missouri, Arkansas, and Kansas have walkin areas that can provide good hunting. If you could come up with a kayak it would increase your opportunities on those areas.

Look into Texas west & SW of Houston. Rice and winter wheat, ducks & snows/specklebellies.

Fifteen or twenty hours might get you to the coast of Maine, but without a boat there wouldn't be much hunting here. On the other hand, if you took the money you were going to pay for private land access and spent it on a guide, you could have a great eider hunt. The cold water might be tough on a dog not trained for or used to it.

Second the comment about lugging a kayak or canoe to increase your options.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I do have a kayak, but my dog is going on 9 years and she has not ever been in it and she is a large version of a lab, so it would not be a safe combination for the two of us. Did not have access to a boat when she was young and she has never been acclimated or comfortable in boats.
Then Dakotas and pothole hunting would be perfect for us, but the drive would be really long for us and I will not fly with her.
Thinking of Kansas but need to do more research on the public hunting there.

alone without a boat...... North Dakota easy, take the extra time. if your going to drive 20 make it 25 hours. I have hunted Kansas for upland for a number of years and there might be a few places around you can do that kind of hunt but not many. Nebraska is going to have some as well, and there are places in every state but hands down ND will give you the best hunts, variety and tons of land open to hunting.

I agree with BillS, ND is the place for a good field hunt and up to mid October for the water hunts, as far as a dog in the water. I drive from S. Florida and its worth every minute. Plan the trip, it's for your best hunting buddy"the dog".
Hey Bill if your ever around Rugby give a shout, Was at Devils Lake the day before, killer day...

FWIW:
There is really good Canada goose hunting in the fields of Long Island toward the end of the season. From what I have heard, it's pretty easy to find and book a guide, too. -And the seasons close fairly late (Jan 25 for ducks). See link for Canada goose dates (Jan 31-Mar 4, depending on location).

...I tried using the 'hyperlink' feature, but it appears to not be working.

Good luck planning your trip.

Thanks again for all of the suggestions and PM's. Leaning towards just sucking it up and heading to North Dakota. The trip will be about having a good time with my dog, since her active days are probably quickly coming to an end due to her age.

Kirk - Check out the new ND non resident license fees, before you go. Way to high for just two weeks me thinks. I've been there many times freelancing, and a good friend now lives there. If I were to make that trip again, I'd stop over and sleep in ND, and then up to Sask. I would go! Take your time driving, and You and Your Best Friend will have the time of your life. NO BOAT REQUIRED.
