Neutering Affects

Does anyone have experience with having their dog neutered? My dog is a German Wirehair and is getting agressive towards my other dog which is an English Setter and my vet suggested fixing him. Might this affect his hunting drive?

My aunt is a breeder and she says it mainly affects the dogs aggressive behavior. She also said that it takes time. They don't just get snipped and the aggressive behavior goes away overnight. In some dogs there may not be any change at all. I don't think it will have much if any affect on his hunting. I am sure there are others that will chime in on weather it affected their dog in the hunting aspect. Good luck.

No negative effects as far as I'm concerned. I've had the last 3-4 dogs snipped at 6 months of age and it has made them much better citizens. No more concerns about getting along with other dogs - hunting drive is still there. As Chris said, it doesn't happen overnight. It takes months for all the hormones to get out of their system.

Once the dog has learned aggressive behavior, and especially if it has gotten what it wanted by being aggressive, cutting it's balls off isn't going to change anything.

You need to train the dog.

But if you aren't going to breed the dog you are better off to have it nuetered.

How old is it and how long has it been aggressive?

The dog is about 8 yrs old. He's always had the tendency to get aggresive in certain situations that might startle him but for some reason in the last couple of weeks he's definitly got worse. When I say aggressive I mean he'll growl or bark at you but he always calms down quickly when you scold him or talk to him. He won't stay in the yard even with a shock collar and what ever is bothering him he takes his aggression out on the other dog.

Nick,

I think I have to disagree with you on that one. Case by case you might find a dog now and then that doesn't respond to neutering with a better disposition but that has not been my experience. I have had universally good experiences with neutering dogs.

I've hade this conversation with many a breeder of hunting breeds and they all say no affect on hunting drive but they may put on extra weight slowing them down so proper diet monitoring is a must. So 4 years ago when I fixed my male lab there was no loss of hunting drive but he became more aggressive towards other male dogs and even more protective of HIS property and HIS humans. From what i hear this is a rare case but fixing them is defiantly better for their heath.

An 8 year old dog that has always been edgy and won't stay in the yard is not likely to be phased by nuetering.

However, that's not to say that he shouldn't be nuetered, he probably should for a variety of reasons, it's just that aggression isn't likely one of them.

Good luck however you proceed.

Neutering won't hurt the situation, probably will help. Weight gain is not the dogs fault. The dog doesn't feill the feed bowl, just empties it!
