New boat build

It is pretty much a Toller ATC (Air Traffic Control) 15'7"x59"... If I build it, it will be a surface drive.

Good morning, Phil~

Great ideas at work!

Do you plan for any crown in the deck? And camber in the bottom? Got the framing all planned out?

I sure hope you begin the build soon!

Just a suggestion, get s copy of Zack Taylor's "successful Waterfowling" and build one of his?
He has plans in there for several little wooden duckboats. One is a very neat little 10', lightweight, flat bottom, all plywood gunning john very similar to what you have there. That way, he gives you all of the specs, measurements, etc.

Just a late note thought...

I knew you had too much empty space in that shed of yours.

When Paul pics up the Honker. There will be a big hole in the Duck barn... Empty nest syndrome for a. Duck boat addict, I guess...[w00t]

I am planning, no crown or camber. I am sure that there will be things that change, but I have the framing figured out. I am going to make it stitch and glue, not the way the Gator Duckhunter or the way Brad makes these currently.

That will be a great build. Think about how to get the bilge to drain well, that is always my concern with the flat bottom plywood boats.

Phil,
If no crown I'd suggest at least having it drain towards the front. Only draw back with that is knowing just what "level" will be depending on the load and such. I have a spot actually two spots (one on each side) of the rear deck on my BBIII that holds water. Until I added another piece of combing to the original build, that water would drain into the cockpit.
I realize you will have a combing on the front of the cockpit, but you certainly won't want water pooling there.

This surprises no one who knows you Phil - you've been too quiet lately [cool] Figured you were up to something LOL.

That's a pretty good sized boat. Estimated weight? Hull thickness? Estimated motor HP?

I am not sure what the final length with be about 15'6"... based on the Toller specs.. it is about 450#. There are obvious differences in the construction methods. I am not sure what that will do to the weight, other that mine will probably be heavier. Since this is intended to be a mud boat.. that will be in stumpier areas...and will have knees not full bulkhead through the cockpit. The final floor will be 3/4". I intend to use 3/4" (18mm) hydrotech on the back half, and scarf a 3/8 (9mm) sheet to it, then cold form another 3/8 to the top of the front sheet after the bow rise has been introduced.

The Toller is rated for a 35hp. I am looking for a used 23-35 hp surface drive... I have a line on a 29hp Kawasaki/Mud Buddy.... but we will see.

That's quite a beast, is a 29 hp SD going to be enough? Any idea of draft?

I know how you attack a project - probably be ready for a test run before ice out. [cool]

Well.. Copperhead claims that their 23 will push a 1548 at 25-28 mph... All depends on the load.. they say their 18 hp will push a 1540 with 2 guys and gear, 22-25mph... Surface drive have quite a bit more speed than a long tail.... Speed isn't important on this boat...usually.. and you know I like speed... :D so....

I can't believe this will draft more than 4".. but...if I make this .. I will not start until warm weather.. I have no rush...

Phil

I'm concerned the cardboard will weaken when wet.

Seriously, I'm looking forward to your build. Like others said I recommend adding some crown to the decks. Not only does it shed water but it also creates strength with almost no additional weight. Looks better too imho.

Keep us posted.

I don't see how a crown to the decks is needed for a boat that looks like this, to shed water... the water will run off before it comes into the cockpit. The front deck will be 1x4's under the plywood and 10oz glass.. strength will not be an issue. I understand my model does not have a cockpit combing, but it will be there. One will never see the hull shape anyway... the grass will always be attached.

With a little epoxy.. I think the cardboard will be fine...

Same reason a flat sidewalk is not flat. All commercial and city specs call for a sidewalk to have a 1/4 inch slope per foot so it sheds water. You and I don't even notice that slope, but the water does.

And a boat is never flat... especially on the water

Flat yes, level no. Water will run down a slope. But when you have crown the distance it has to run is shorter, hence less time, hence less water at any given time.
