New Carving Vice Stand

After 35 years of using my dad's old night stand, for my carving vice. I upgraded.

After I took the vice off the night stand, a pile of dust from all the decoys made over all those years, remained under the vice. I'll put that dust in a jar for safe keeping, to pay homage to my father who died at age 44, when I was 14.

A very good friend and welding instructor, custom made this stainless steel, vice stand for me.

Legs are adjustable to increase, or decrease height. Rock solid base, allows me to hand carve without much concern at all. Plus I can take it to Demo's.

MY BACK IS VERY HAPPY!!

Only thing is. The Wilton Utility Vice no longer opens on it's own and needs tapped with a mallet. Have tried to get a repair kit, but cannot find any ID# on the vice anywhere.

Good set-up and your friend does nice work. I had a thought looking at your set-up. Does your stand ever move? If is doesn't you could modify the stand with 4 tabs instead of legs, and bolt it to the concrete. That way your feet would always be clear.

Thank you, he does very good work indeed.

The stand moves very little, if at all, and I just put one foot on one of the legs. This way I'm not flat footed all the time while carving.

We did consider bolting it to the floor, but the cellar shop gets water in it at times, so things must be moved quickly.

I plan on making some wooden caps, to put over the protruding foot bolts.

Other than that, it is a major improvement for a Old School Geezer Carver.

Hi Vince,
Your buddy done a nice job on that stand, a lifetime setup for sure. In one of your pictures is another vice, would that be for heads ?

That's a Muskrat Tools Vice, I use just for carving heads.

Also 35 years old. Wore it out, and had a machinist rebuild it a few years ago. .Once I buy something that suits my needs, I tend to hold on to it for a long time.

Thanks.

The parts that open the vice broke, and are gone. WD-40 will not help.

Not being able to ID the vice, is no help in ordering replacement parts.

Thank you very much for the info.

I have checked Wilton Vice sites, for repair kits, for their Utility Vice. I just must find the ID of the one I have. Then order the proper kit.
