New layout boat paint scheme

Busick one man layout boat I built last summer. Originally I just added dark grey pigment to the epoxy and brushed on the light grey. It fooled the birds, but didn't look great.

Nice two man limit of greater scaup, but looks like I dipped a duck's ass into the paint can and wiped it on boat.

New and improved, shot both colors with the HVLP gun. Based on Lou's "open water" paint scheme. Open Water #34 Dark Grey is the base, the ghost stripes are Open Water #32 Light Grey.

Looks good. I really like the combination of #34 and #32 also. I painted two of my boats the same way and really like the way they turned out.

It was a lot of fun. Used the Busick plans which were very detailed, accurate and complete. Boats by Busick (440) 988-7160.

Couple of modifications; dropped the box to allow some toe wiggle room, and put a sled bow on the front end of the box for towing.

Pretty straightforward construction, although it might be easier and interesting to carve the top profile out of foam and cover with epoxy rather than using lots of wood ribs and plywood. This has been suggested on this board before, if you do a search you might find some inspiration. I think a Kara style boat was featured on the Michigan Waterfowler site somewhere. I wouldn't change the bottom construction at all other than adding an extra band of fiberglass right in the middle of the bottom where your weight is concentrated when you get in the boat. 1/4" of plywood and two layers of 6 oz. is pretty strong, but these boats are used in challenging conditions and you don't want to stick your boots through the bottom in the big water.

Word of caution, if you build this boat then before you know it you'll have to build a bigger tender to handle all the gear unless you have one already. Snow Goose by Devlin is a pretty awesome design.
 
I was think of trying the foam idea, right now I have an old duck master layout witch was latter known as the DW latout when bought by duck Wrangler. Love the boat. It takes a motor witch rises and lowers for profile and running. Holds up to 80 decoys with two guys. I was thinking of building a single man that could be towed. How well does your layout towe? do you have any pics of it being towed?

Tows ok at slow speed and calm water. Think of a dipsy doodle or a side planing rig for fishing. Once that nose digs in you're toast. Best bet is to carry it athwartship if you are running any distance or in rough water. Or lift the nose right up with a gin pole or davit arrangement and just let the back end drag. Can't go very fast that way either.

No pics, my hands are usually full when we are setting up...
