As the season around here has been real slow, I've been spending some time out scouting around for some totally new areas. Found one that looked promising but had some issues I discussed with the local CO. After that discussion, I figured I didn't want to be the court test case but did ask about other areas. The CO told me about a spot that just opened up not even two weeks back. Said it was a great little spot and no one knew about it. Sounds like my kind of place. I send my buddy over to take a look, got the skinny, and headed out the next day to check it out.
I get to the landing and soon realize it is going to be more of a challenge than my buddy mentioned the other day. The water is frozen (not a big deal) but the channel to get out there was wide enogh for the first 25 yards and then narrow to the point where I didn't know if the bigger boat would make it through. We decided to give it the old college try and launched the boat. Right away I knew I wasn't going to be able to use this motor so out came the push pole. I got to where the channel narrowed and I think I had about 1" clearance on either side of the boat as I pushed through abour 100 yards or so.
The channel you see below is the wide part. YTou can't see the narrow portion

Got out to the main lake and the whole thing is wild rice. Unbelieveable to have a spot like this that is close to the Twin Cities. I hope many don't learn of it's location and I hope the channel remains narrow. I figure this is going to be the perfect spot for next year (frozen over by now) for the two little boats. Paddle/motor out to the middle of the lake, pull the camo over and shoot ducks. To say this place was heaven is an understatement. We watched flock upon flock of duck land out more in the middle of the lake and towards a point over on one side. As this was an evening hunt, and the water mostly frozen, I didn't venture too far from the little channel to go hunt. Now that I have seen the lake, the next time I will be more than comfortable to hunt the good spots. Can't wait till next year.

Never lifted the gun but it sure was fun watching the action all around.
