Our daughter Tori is on her way to "A" school in Mississippi, she graduated from basic training yesterday at the Great Lakes Recruit Training Command in Chicago. Her mom and I are very proud of her. I even gave up a day of duck hunting to drive through Chicago to see her graduate. Now we just have to make our way back through Chicago to get home tomorrow...I hate driving in Chicago!!

That is wonderful, Steve. Giving up a day of duck hunting is painful enough but to have to drive through the Windy City--well, heck I guess it means nothing when you see the results of that picture that you included.
Congratulations to your daughter.

Absolutely, it was well worth the trip...even if it was Chicago. She got the easy way out of the big city and flew to Misssissippi this morning. We leave early tomorrow morning for the ride back to PA. I wouldn't have missed this for anything...it's still early season for ducks anyway.

Steve:
There is nothing like a graduation ceremony to get the emotions going! Congratulations to your new Sailor! Please convey my thanks for her service to our country.

You got that right Terry...the graduation cermony was absolutely awe inspiring. We have a DVD of the whole thing on the way. I can't wait to watch it again. I will be sure to relay your thanks and congratulations as well as everybody elses.

Thank you sir,
Steve

I remember my graduation from that same building. It was a great feeling and will never forget the proud look on my mothers face along with tears of joy. Congrats. Did her division win the cherios?

Steve, my son graduated from there Sept 7th, and is now down in San Antonio TX finishing up his "A" school, he is going to be a Master at Arms and will be done with that Nov 2nd, and then he is off to Mississippi for some advance training, then off to Bahrain for 18 months, I guess we get to see him for 3 weeks before he goes. Also my nephew is in the Navy stationed in the state of Washington.

Also I agree with you, the graduation is something to watch, when you watch those young sailors march in to that building, your heart leaps into your throat and then right then and there you couldn't be more proud of your kid for choosing that path.

Tell your sailor thanks for her service, and to enjoy the experience.

Congrats Steve, A huge feather in your cap to have a daughter or son that thinks enough of this country to want to serve. I went through Great Lakes too but I bet it's changed a bit since 1968. She's got some great times ahead of her - my time in the Navy was a definate turning point in my life and something I never regretted.

Did her division win the cherios?

Actually yes...out of 14 graduating divisions the 327 division (My Daughters) was the only division to successfully get all of the flags for graduation. Though, the 822 Division went into the "Hall of Fame"...She said that was the Spec Ops / Seals division - now that's some stiff competition, but even they didn't attain all of the flags.

Kirby - I'm sure the Meridian Station is pretty large, but your son may cross paths with my daughter down there at some point. She will be stationed there until early December. Then return home to attend college and do her Reserve committment. She already mentioned wanting to finish college then opt for voluntary mobilization for her last 2 years. She may stick with it longer than her 6 year committment if she finds her niche. Congratulations to you as well and thank your son and nephew for their service.

Ryan & Pete...Thank you - I'll be sure to forward your congrats and thanks along to her.

That's great steve I remember marching through base with that flag and it was a great feeling. For about a year after boot camp I would still count my steps in my head as I walked anywhere "left, right, left, right". It was a great time in my life. tell her I said congrats on the hall of fame div. That's great.

We're very proud John. It's kind of funny though. She never seemed interested in joing the military when I talked to her about it. A recruiter came to her school last year and one of the teachers offered everybody 5 points for attending the recruiting session. She attended and joined immediately afterwards. I still wonder if that teacher gave 10 points for actually joining?

Anyway, I will pass along the thanks and congrats Carl, Chris, and Jay.
