New shop toy and a question.

Picked up this dust collector from a friend today. He has never had it hooked up. It's a grizzly 2 hp motor with a psi industries tempest cyclone canister. I am not familiar with these systems at all.

My question is how should I go about installing this? I am guessing the bottom of the canister goes into a trash can and is for heavier dust. The middle opening is the intake? And the top opening on the motor is for the finer dust?

Does the top discharge go to a bag? Or some other type of filter?

Here's a pic

Although I have a different manufacturer, It's similar to what I have out in my shop, but at the moment, it's buried.

Basically, it stands up vertically, with the smaller part of the cone down. You will hook-up the hoses to the tools to the top of the red apparatus, or commonly called "cyclone". Under the cone, will be a collection tub for the heavy chips. Then at the top, green motor fitting, you'll want some sort of massive filter. In a nutshell, the way it works is all of the debris gets sucked up into the top of the red cyclone, it swirls inside round and round. Eventually the larger, heavier chips fall to the bottom while the finer dust goes up thru the fan and out into the filter. They work remarkably well.

Look up "cyclone dust collectors". Among other places, Rockler Woodworking, (rockler.com) has a pretty good selection of pieces and parts. You can get hoses and fittings, clamps, etc. An important thing to consider is an anti-static set-up. Usually a bare wire that runs inside the hoses and connects to a grounding point. These machines produce a tremendous amount of static electricity. Anytime you use plastic hoses, you'll get a build-up. Sparks and dust equals trouble!

Good luck!

I have one that the dust goes in the green and into the canister which has a bag on top. Different then yours but they all do the same thing which really cuts down on dust and cleanup. I have mine hooked up to my table saw using a four inch flex hose.
