And how easy it is to do on most motors. I replace mine every two years or if I am in a lot of sandy/silty water a lot, then I do it more frequently. For the cost of an impeller kit and an hour or so of my time, it seems like good preventative maintenance. Like you say though, they can last a long time. A good friend of mine NEVER changes his and has never had an issue.
 
If it wern't for the shift linkages, they woudl about change themselves (even Sutton could do it).

Nissan recommends rebuilding the water pumps every year for trouble free operation. On line, before shipping, a discounted rebuild kit is $62, figure $70 - $75 delivered. I'm going on 10 yrs now and she's still peeing a solid stream. I'm approaching a $700 savings over the recommended change interval. That's about a third of what I paid for the outboard new. I wonder how much a new 25-hp power head is (probably no longer avail.), a few more years on the existing water pump and I will save enough to put a brand new power head on her. Twenty more years and I've saved enough to pay for a whole new outboard. 150 more years & I'll have saved enough to retire :^)

I just seems that Nissan is awfully proud of a few little parts. If they said that the impeller material was an upgraded rubber good for 5 years I would be happy, but yearly???

I came close last fall to buying a rebuild kit but I figured with all that shallow water below me I could simply walk the boat out. Now that you know we could be drifting through the rapids I guess I better rebuild it so you continue to join me. - bye the bye - Min is swinging by tomorrow to pick up the remains of the two brant.

The only reason to do the whole pump is if it is ground up from grit. An impeller shouldn't be more than 15-20 bucks. The Johnson pump kit is about 50.00 for mine but the impeller is about 12.00 . I'd just change the impeller for piece of mind..that is about the only part that can go wrong...and it's a BIG wrong when it goes.
 
Memory may be failing me, but I think I paid less than $50 for the entire kit (not just the impeller) from my tiny little local dealer who happens to sell nissans. I had to order it and wait a couple of weeks, but for that price, how can you go wrong?

1980 30hp evinrude, 29 bucks for the whole kit, impeller was 12 if that is all you wanted. Took it out (was about 7 years old) had some memory in the rubber, NO scoring of the cup, no cracks in the impeller, but I replaced it all then, never since. 4 years ago.

I agree on the shift linkage...damn Jesus clip sprung on me in a filthy shop....30 hour with a magnet and I found it finally UNDER the furnace...(never change them on sunday's when the parts store is closed is the moral here)
 
When I buy a used motor, I change the whole works..then just change the impeller every couple years. I took the lower unit off a 20hp that was on my mom's pontoon for several years..then set in my brothers garage for 5 years after he and his buddy sailed the pontoon into the ditch towing it to storage..and put it on my Navy seal outboard that had the pumpjet lower on it. I had a whole kit that I was going to change on the pump jet but used it on this one. The gear oil smelled up the shop for a month..black stinking burned crap and the cup the impeller turns in was scored and you could see melted rubber where it was eating the impeller..the impeller was rotten too. I think I caught it just in time. I started my Navy Seal motor to beak it in and fine tune it in a 35 gallon barrel in the back yard and it pee'd a hole in the dirt..had to keep the hose going full blast in the barrel.
 
You aren't lying that it's a BIG wrong when an impeller goes out. I had to pole,paddle and wade an old polarcraft for about 5 miles one day on account of a disintergrated impeller. From that point on I've changed or had them changed every two years. Put in a stranding situation impellers are real cheap.
