NJ Salt Marsh Saturday

Got back down to South Jersey Saturday with my father and our lab Ozzie and found out it had been invaded by black ducks. As we ran out through the marsh we were putting up wave after wave of them, many at quite a distance so we knew it would be a tough time fooling a few, but we only needed to fool two!

We scratched out our two and a bonus hen mallard, but the highlight was dropping a crippled black duck in the sedge, across a mosquito ditch and having Ozzie do a great retrieve. Having a good dog really brings what could be regarded as a mediocre hunt to another level. I was able to get a little of him doing his thing on video.

Not a ton of good shooting in this one, but a good one for the sights and sounds of South NJ. http://youtu.be/uxwTiYGC88w

Thanks Paul. I run a Bob Fricke glass over cedar sneakbox and my father runs an all glass Kristiansen Highlands box. His boat is a bit faster than mine.

Craig-

Great video. Nice dog work.

How was the wind Saturday?

I was down hunting Friday and was planning to hunt Saturday morning too. I watched the wind build during the day Friday so watched the NOAA Marine forecasts for Saturday pretty closely. My intent was to hunt divers in open water. NOAA was forecasting winds to be NNW 14-16 knots with gusts to 22 knots and a small craft advisory for most of the day.

I decided to bail on the open water hunt due to limitations of my boat. But rather than go with plan B and head back to sheltered water, I crawled back into the warm flannel sheets. Your video has me second guessing my decision.

Chad I'd say the NOAA forecast was accurate. The wind dropped out around 4pm so that's why it looks pretty calm on the ride in. We were back in some protected creeks so it's hard to see the amount of wind, but I'd say it was 10-15 with gusts to 20 at times.

Great shots. Enjoyed this. Seems to me that being able to shoot black ducks makes that duck hunt all that much better.

Fantastic scenery, most people think of Jersey and think of the cities and suburban sprawl, definitely not beautiful marshlands like this!

You need a bigger motor....

Nice video. Was it a Hero cam that recorded all the video by chance? Very cool.

Mark I think a 15 is fast enough, 22 mph is about the hull speed for my boat as it's not a true planing hull.

This was filmed with two Hero 3s. If you don't put them in the super wide field of view it doesn't look quite as fisheye'd.
