Not fun being on the news....dog almost died

I can't rehash the details yet again but if it wasn't for my hunting partner having an axe in his vehicle that I used to break out the rear window, Stacey and I wouldn't be nursing Cash back to health today. He has some pneumonia and is on some antibiotics and liver medicine. Miracles do happen now and again. Scary...

Stacey has a fundraiser going on Facebook to help with the vet bill that might reach $3,000. Cash has some follow up appointments including x-rays.

JimG.....

You must be sick. Thank God Cash is OK.

When you feel up to it, tell us how it all happened. Maybe something to learn from. I almost went in the drink with my vehicle and boat on a very icy ramp. By the Grace of God I didn?t go all the way in.

Mark

Dry ramp.... backed down, keeping the rear tires on the dry concrete, put it in park and set the brake. I never let the dog(s) out of the vehicle until the boat is launched and the vehicle parked. I pushed the boat off of the trailer and was pulling the boat to the side when the vehicle just started rolling down the ramp. I was powerless. My partner had an axe in his truck and I took the boat to the now submerged vehicle and managed to break the rear window, but I couldn't get in the water and I thought the dog was done. After about 20 minutes one of the firemen yells "there he is". Cash managed to find the broken out window and got out, but hypothermia had set in and he couldn't swim or I don't think could even understand us calling him. I hopped in the boat and went out to him and managed to pull him over the gunnel. TDB SC14 so it's a bit of a pull. I got the boat to shore and two firemen lifted the dog out of the boat, brought him to a police SUV and wrapped him in a blanket and the officer and a fireman were gone, lights going, to a 24 hour emergency vet 20 minutes away.

Yikes! Very happy to hear the pup is recovering and nobody else was hurt.
That had to be rough 20 minutes.

Tim

That is really scary Jim. Hope you and the pup recover quickly.

Two years ago a friend of mine had his lab go down with hyperthermia after a day of hunting in a field with 12-18 inches of water. He said he was picking up decoys and looked over to see his lab float by completely lifeless under water. They recovered the dog, one of they guys was an EMT and he started CPR. They got the dog into a vehicle and back to a warm house in 20 minutes. His dog survived and to this day you would never know the dog was clinically dead. I hope you have a similar experience.

Please let us know what happens.

WOW.. Glad this was the better of the possible outcomes! I always leave a window down when I launch or retrieve a boat.. especially since I have a manual transmission, and don't always trust the E-Brake.

Jim
I heard this on the local news. Wow I'm glad your dog got out. I hope a full recovery is made.

Good morning, Jim~

I am so glad this tale had a happy outcome - and that Cash has a full and speedy recovery.

You've probably thought of this already, but - wheel chocks are handy. I first saw them used by a friend who tied each to his truck. When he pulled up the ramp they came with him. I have a pair tied together with decoy line. The line loops over the hitch so they follow me up the ramp.

And, modern vehicles can be mysterious. A good friend's new Tahoe drove itself into his swimming pool while he was in his house napping.

All the best,

SJS

Steve beat me to it. My inlaws have a house in PA with one of those scary driveways. First thing I do EVERY time is grab a log off the woodpile and chock my truck. The bottom of the driveway is a direct line to the neighbor's front door. Can you imagine?
Glad you and the dog are all good; scary indeed.

Great idea about the lines Steve. I have a pair of heavy rubber ones from Harbor Freight that I can set up a line system on......when I can replace my vehicle which might not be for a while. Thanks for the idea. This was basically a season ender for us. Cash is on light duty for 2 weeks and no tow vehicle.

Jim

Jim, that sounds scary as hell. So glad you are all accounted for. I kept looking at that picture of the boatramp scene, and thinking about how you could go in to do a rescue...

I think you'd have to strip all your gear off to bare skin and just jump in and be quick.

I had a situation where I was crossing a canal that was about 15 feet across. 1 ft out it was 1 foot deep, 3 feet out it was 2 feet deep... 6 feet out I was totally underwater. I remember pushing up off of the bottom and walking on water to the shore it was so cold.

I did jumping jacks and pushups to warm up and had to go right home too. Not fun. Not fun at all. I swear to this day though, that as I left that day, I heard the ducks along the river's edge laughing as we got back to the boat launch.

Dang it that'd be a horrible experience! Glad to see your pup is okay! Your experience is going to change the order of how I do things when I launch my boat with my pup.

I see fella's crate their dogs on boat trips to camp (18-20 miles one way) and I think "what if" the boat took a ships wave and sunk....the pup wouldn't stand a chance to get out of the crate.

WOW Jim. That truly is scary. Steve's ideas about the chocks are some I am going to look into.

I am glad to hear that everyone is okay.

Thanks for sharing the story Jim. Very strange. I am so grateful Cash is OK. I can?t imagine what you were going through.

I like the wheel choke idea and will have to use it - Thanks Steve.

I had another time at a ramp that was snowy and icy. I had backed the boat into the water and was set to launch it. As I was walking back to the trailer I saw the truck move a little. Didn?t know if it was my imagination or what. Before I could react the truck and trailer started sliding down the ramp into the water. I was extremely lucky that when the trucks rear tires hit the water it stopped. Also very lucky that the truck slid straight backwards.

Guess what I?m saying is weird things happen that we never could have imagined. Hope you are OK.

Mark

Jim, i bought a set of those heavy rubber chocks specifically for steep ramps but have yet to use them. I guess now is the time,i like Steves idea, gonna do the same.
Glad things turned out well.

I'm glad that Cash and yourself are okay. A learning experience for everyone so thanks for sharing with us.

First off, I am glad your dog and you are OK. Steve is so right though. Wheel chocks. It's an extra step but man...so important. I'm guilty of not having them myself.

[size 4] Wow, Jim. Glad you are OK and the dog is recovering.
Ramp mishaps can be scary,

Think I'll run by Harbor Freight for a set of chocks soon.

Jeez Jim, glad you and Cash weren't left with anything permanent. Thanks for sharing your story because I know for the rest of the season I won't rely on the parking brake on my 85 SR5 while it idles on the ramp in neutral. I think I will put it in first and shut it down too.
