Oar on a DP

All,

Anyone have any experience/comments/lessons learned with mounting and using oars on/with a DP?

I'm getting ready to purchase as DP which I will use primarily to hunt marches and rivers. However, until such time as I can afford a mudmotor I think the best way to for me to navigate a loaded-down DP upriver against moderate shallow current is with oars....can keep it straight with more power verse polling or paddling.

Looks like the door-blind kit may prevent using oars.

Thanks

Kevin

If your in shallows, polling would be best, once you learn the technique. You need 2-3ft of water to row or paddle effectively.

Joe,

Have polled before...not with a DP. I fear it will be difficult/exhausting polling against the current....by the time I reset the pole I'll have lost much of my forward progress. Plus when the river is "up" the curent is stronger.

I actually like to row, and do it fairly frequently with my Barnegats but I'm going to say that the kayak paddle would be the way to go on the DP.....I row facing forward in the Barnegat and wouldn't want to do it any other way against a current and I beleive you can get just as much power with a kayak as you could with oars while facing forward....plus you can trim the boat with a kayak paddle no matter what the load distribution by changing where you sit.....oarlocks being fixed you can't do that and will have to trim by moving the load around.....

I'll stick with the paddle on mine.....if you go with oarlocks then just cut out the area on the doors so the oarlock mount comes through the door material when its in the down position....

Kevin,

if I were you I'd get your rich wife to buy you a mudmotor that way you could pull your buddies boat and he would not have to row/paddle or pole.

Steve,

Thanks for the reply....good point regarding the trim. Probably best to practice with a kayak paddle this summer and see how it works. If not, I'll re-look oars of will have saved enough to buy a mudmotor.
