October "Whats on your Work Bench?"

Fall is in the air here in Pennsylvania and duck season is on my mind. It opens here next Saturday and I just happen to start vacation that day. I'm not sure if I'm going to be hunting with a partner or alone this opening day. My brother and nephew have a Martial Arts tournament that morning and my normal hunting partner told me that he has to fly his boss to Jerusalem. So we'll see.

On my work bench currently there is another Mallard drake, last month's went to live with someone else so I need another one for Easton in November. This time he's not a sleeper but both wings are exposed again. And if you look you can see that he does have tail curls. In the background you find the three "pocket" wood duck hens for my hunting rig that I showed last month. I have started to play with the paint some. I originally wanted them done for use this fall but other things have taken priority.

And these next photos are of the finished tails of the woodie hens.

So that's how I'm starting October, my favorite month of the year. Whats on your work bench this month?

John: As always, your posts are a feast for the eyes. I can't wait to get home and finish your mallard and ringneck that I mailed home a few weeks ago, along with all kinds of other odds and ends that I started here. Then you guys can see what's on my real workbench for October.

Mike

I'll second that! If you are planning on being home by the end of October,,,,,,,,, keep you eyes open and your head down between now and then.

Mike----hope you're home soon and look forward to seeing your posts. Thank You!!
Carl----nice work on the foamers. They will fool the birds and that's all that matters.

Kyle has finally finished this canvasback. He has been awfully busy with hockey and working the farm early this fall. We haven't even had a chance to get out hunting yet but that will change soon. I'm proud of the work he put into this bird and maybe a little jealous.

In honor of duck season starting I painted a.....Bull Trout? A little larger watercolor then I've done before, the trout is 16" long.

doing a pair of these for the season. one for me and one in trade for some work being done on a mudmotor of mine

Just paint playtime, Herters 63 bodies that I bought when they were $39 a dz (I think) right after Cabelas bought out Herters, the heads are from Toledo Decoy I also bought years ago.

Just fun, relaxing paint and music.

My first decoy. Played around with a few cedar and basswood heads but nothing productive at all. This was done with the alot of help from Jode Hillman. He makes it look so easy, but he is a great teacher. I'm going to clean up the eye grooves a little and sand a little more and then paint this weekend

I just finished up this project for a client. it took about 10 days start to finish and I hate being under the gun but I'm happy with the outcome. They are headed out today.

Picture is poor (phone camera), but have a mallard and black that need primaries/speculum, nails and nostrils, plus the white neck ring on the mallard.

Have another mallard drake that is in grisaille up next...going to a forum member who was gracious enough to give me some time on a swap bird while Laura and I were dealing with her health problems.
