October workbench thread

The drake is a bird I saved from the burn pile at Rutgers. The hen is one I carved a while ago to match it that didn't get painted until last month. She came with us to Manitoba with the speculum paint still wet. This was taken after my dog's first hunt there.

Andew, that drake is sure an eye catcher. I was visualizing a flock of ducks flying along and spotting it with ease in your spread-----then making a swing to come in.

Great Greater, Chris~

I'll bet the birds will come right in to it - even with all that blaze orange......

(Also, I'll bet many of us set aside the carving so we can work on duckboats.)

All the best,

SJS

Chris,
You made a big jump on the paint and carving with that bird. Looks great!

Andrew,
Looks good they were fun to gun over. Let me know when you get my pair ready. I have not started your two teal yet. Want to race?

Nice work from everyone as usual. The thread for October does seem a little slow. Hopefully, I don't totally derail it. The teal season was slow down here in Florida. Only one woodie and one teal for two days, but great to be back in the swamp. Here she is # 27 GWTH with my duckboats.net Steve Steffy benefit call. Has a great tone and is easy on the eyes. Thanks, Jeff

little bird in the middle is from 2006 that needed a rehab due to a traumatic open head wound from #2 shot last year.

he was in acrylic and I don't even own any acrylic paint so figured it was time to paint the whole bird. I will always keep that bird in my collection. I was carving the head once at turkey camp. kept hearing a gobbler off several hundred yards where my dad hunts. I went down to see what was happening. the gobbler was stuck up on a ridge strutting back and forth and would not come down to my Dad. I sent him up the ridge and moved off a little to keep the bird interested while he moved into position. Well that dude responded to a cut and ran down the hill to me in no time. Luckily my father is not a jealous person.

BSCork Magnum Teal, kind of like jumbo shrimp but I did it. Anyway I'm kind of embarrassed to post these here, but there's no beginner's section to post in. These are my first puddle ducks and my first tube paint birds. Definitely fun and I learned a bunch, so it's on to the next batch, wigeon. Heads are mounted on 1.25 pillars for strength and under compression to prevent the necks from cracking. I've also cast up pads and cut leather ties making these my first non-keeled decoys, trying to flash back to CT decoy history.
