Mushrooms, I was in the middle of Illinois, Springfield to be exact. The subject of mushrooms came up. The next thing I was invited to partake. At the host house at two o'clock in the morning. The host had gotten some mushrooms from the side of a tree. I had never heard of that before. He broke up the mushrooms in to bite size pieces and put them in a plastic bag with butter and flour. Mixed them up and then fried them on his out side grill. I was hoping they weren't poisonous. I was the last to take a bite. They were delicious. If any one ever remembers the skit that Jackie Gleason did where a chair was tipping and instead of immediately getting up and correcting the situation, fought it and eventually lost. Our host was going though that with a beer in one hand and a plate of mushrooms in the other, in a old lawn chair. It took a about ten minutes. A lot of struggling but he finally lost. The lawn chair gave up and down he went, beer in the air, plate of mushrooms sailing, face in the dirt, blue smoke in the air. Two spectators who were anticipating the inevitable out come, bursting forth with the laughter that brings moisture to your eyes. Now looking back at that situation I wonder if he,s still married.
