It looks like it has started to reach land. Carl what are the stage agencies doing for prep and attack on this potential monster?

Thanks for the read, Matt. I have a feeling this spill will be a costly one. So much damage still to be uncovered. IF, they don't get it capped until the second relief well is drilled, it is very possible the bluewings will be heading in that direction shortly thereafter. That is just pure "UGLY" what will happen then---not to say what will happen to those countless shorebirds and the fisheries throughout the summer.
Do you know when the tank is supposed to lowered over the well head? They showed a picture of the structure on a barge this week.

What the media calls "oil" hitting the beach and what the agencies consider "oil" is two different things, so take that report with a grain of salt.

As far as I know, there has been no large scale landfall of oil. That is not to say some fingers of sheen and/or tar balls have not come ashore in LA, but from what I have seen this morning, no large scale oiling. There is a big difference between getting a "sheen" onshore and getting "oil" onshore. Sheen will evaporate, oil has to be cleaned up or burned off. And of course, all this could change quickly if the winds increase a/o shift.

What are we doing? cant speak to what is going on offshore, but in state waters, HUNDREDS of miles of boom are being deployed all around the Gulf, if there is an oil boom on this continent, its been requested to be shipped here. These booms are being deployed all along the marshes & smaller inlets. We even have a plan in place to boom off the mouth of Mobile Bay.
We also have barriers going up on beaches, plans to actually close one small inlet and lots of pre-impact baseline sampling going on.
At this point, I dont know what else we could be doing to prepare. We just need that damn well shut off.
Here is the latest trajectory map. I think next week is when we will start to see the first major impacts onshore. But once again, changes in winds & current can make a huge difference.

Carl,

I take the media with a 50lb salt block followed by a shot of Jack.....not just a grain......one reason I asked you what the state agencies were up to. Funny thing about journalism, they view themselves as the savior of our country (e.g. Watergate...) and can not be content to accurately and without bias fulfill that view...

I have been watching the NOAA site also. Let's hope that the preparation the agencies are doing will minimize the damage when the "stuff" does come to shore.

Thanks

The cap is on its way to the bottom and/or may be there already. Once in place they have to hook up the pipes that will take warm water & antifreeze down & the oil up to the tanker. It will take a while to get the system running & kinks worked out. Hopefully, it will be within a couple of days.

Some of the best journalists in Alaska started their own journalism website after leaving the local paper. One of them - Craig Medred - has been down on the Gulf "blogging" what he sees. He spent time covering the Exxon Valdez in 1989 and 1990 and has made a few comparisons. Other members of the journalism crew are looking at the local business reaction in Alaska as well as on the national scene with DC's knee jerk reaction.

Most of our current oil production is now off shore in the Arctic. With 80% of our state revenue coming from oil production taxes, stopping new off shore drilling will slowly strangle the state economy. It will kill off the Bush community since there will be no social programs funded by the state. Of course a spill in Arctic waters will never be cleaned up. Several spill response tests have shown that over the years. Once in the broken ice it can't be recovered. Damned if you do. Damned if you don't.

Ray,

Yes the human cost of human made problems and decisions.....somewhere I thunk I heard the...."we have met the enemy and it is us" but you seem to have phrased it..."Damned if you do. Damned if you don't"....

I regret that I have no viable solutions for our inherent nature of foot shooting....

Who gets news from Ariana Huffington?
Everytime I open that link I can only see it out of my LEFT eye.

Maybe squint? ......... lick a salt block as you read?

I read all sorts of stuff from all perspectives.......and still find no "perfect" source.....some are more tainted then others...how is one to determine the quantity/quality of the taint with out reading several sources?

Looks like the Chandelier (sp?) Islands are seeing an impact now, not sure how bad, but its at least a sheen.

Well, Carl, what is the latest from your neck of the woods regarding the oil spill? Yesterday the CEO of British Petroleum said the container idea was a failure---I guess due to ice crystals blocking the spigot type opening of the box.
