Old Duck Hunters, Milwaukee Sports Show

Those of you who live close enough may want to stop in at Bryan Muche's Old Duck Hunter booth at the show next weekend, March 7-10. I'll be there on Saturday and Sunday with the new Gordon MacQuarrie book, Right Off The Reel. You could say this book was born in Milwaukee- it is composed of selected columns he wrote for the Milwaukee Journal, 1936-1956. Also available online. Hope to see you there! Thanks, Dave Evenson

Hi Matt. These stories were published in the Milwaukee Journal during MacQuarrie's tenure as outdoor editor. They have not been republished in any other book, such as the trilogy, or Treasury. That said, some of them were essentially first drafts of magazine stories that later were republished in books, but most of the columns will be brand new to most people. 220 pages, 80 some columns. Thanks, Dave Evenson

Hi Larry. I meant that the book is available for sale on line, if you can't make the Milwaukee Sports Show.
But most of the columns are online also. Google scanned old Milwaukee Journals, as well as thousands of other newspapers. You can find most of the columns I chose (not all, some you have to go to microfilm). It will take you some time- Mac wrote about 3000 columns over his 20 years, and while they were all interesting at the time, some are pretty mundane- I chose the 80 or so that dealt with Mr. President, the shack on Middle Eau Claire, and stories that hit my funny bone. If you want to read them all, be ready to spend some length of time, but also be prepared to find a fascinating mid century look at America- there are dozens of stories I didn't use which you will enjoy. Thanks, Dave Evenson

Ill be there on Saturday and will make it a point to stop by. Coming down from MN to see the grandsons, walk the Sports Show and shoot Clays on Sunday morning at Waukesha GC.
