Old Squaw on the Gulf Coast

Local birder sent us an email this weekend, along with the normal assortment of ducks, there were two old-squaw in a mixed flock of divers in a local bay near Mobile.
This is pretty unusual, I've seen one oldsquaw down here since 1997, and that was last year.

They are in the same bay I will be hunting opening day, so maybe I'll get to see one up close.

Overall, there are a lot more ducks here now than this same time the last 3 years, so its still looking very good for us.

Back when I worked for the DNR in the early 90's I saw a hen old squaw during one of our weekly waterfowl counts on the ash pond at a power plant in central Georgia. No one believed me when I got back to the office so I had to take my boss out there with a spotting scope and show him. We put it on the birder's "hot line" and people came from all over to add it to their life list.
