Saw one of my favorite canoe designs for sale locally and went to take a look at it. I wasnt expecting to buy it but the seller said "shoot me an offer". I did and now I own it. It was designed by a man I knew here in Chicago and produced by Old Town. The design is classic Canadian with high upturned bow and knife edge like stems. A good lake boat with
carrying capacity for two men and gear for a week out.

she needed some glass work on the stems so i glassed a band in

I roughed her up and primed

rustoleum hunter green for a topcoat. I like this stuff. It dries hard and can found almost everywhere. I used a cordless graco HVLP spray gun and put the first coat on in 5 minutes. I like this tool alot!

Bob~

I can see why you like that design!

What did you 'glass in for a stem band?

And, what's the primer? I used to use Rustoleum Flat Black under my dark green (I darkened Rustoleum Hunter Grren for my old gaff sloop's hull).

All the best,

SJS

Bob, in my opinion, that's one of the best canoe designs ever for a lake tripping boat. Those track well, carry a load, shed decent sized waves and can carry some speed. Only downside is those high stems in the wind, but they are what allow the boat to take the waves with a hull shape that will carry some speed.

It's a perfect boat for the many big lakes in the north country from Maine over to the Great Lakes. I once saw a couple who were paddling the shoreline in Pukaskwa National Park up on the north shore of Superior for a one week out and back trip on one of those. It's a fine boat for it.

This is on the long list of fine canoe designs that Old Town used to make that got abandoned for some reason.

Nice job on the redo. It's a keeper.

Steve, I was going to use kevlar felt as a stem/keel guard but decided I am not that rough on my boats and also I didnt want that blob up there anyway. I mixed up some microballoon puttyto fair our the wear spots and the ran 4 inch tape 36 inches back. Its kind of a sacrificial piece anyway. But as I said Im a wet foot canoe paddler.
Jeff, I had heard Bell canoe was making tis design now. You are right about old town and the good designs no longer in production. Im partial to these styles of canoes. The livery fleet across most of the boundary waters canoe are is dominated by We-no-nah's Minnesota II which has limitations for me.

heres my old EM white that just made another B-Dub trip this summer
