I have been carving and painting about an hour a night for the last few weeks and getting a little of lots of things part way done. Tonight my wife had a dinner with the girls and the kids were in bed early. I finally got some paint on some decoys and will try and take some pictures of them tomorrow in the light I cant get them to turn out in the house right now.

I did start on this guy tonight and need to break out the rasps tomorrow and attack it.

Paul I used that spokeshave and draw knife tonight on the cedar. Its like butter. I cant see any reason to power carve with tools and wood like this :)

Pat, I used the pattern you sent me over a year ago as a starting point to develop this one. Thanks for the help!

Ill take a few more pictures after I get it with the rasps and sand paper tomorrow.

Looks AWESOME Brandon. Nice and clean. Should make a great decoy. Can't wait to see it in paint!

Glad to see the shave is working for you!
 
Brandon, make sure you do some counterbalancing with the weight in the keel when you get that hiaryhead painted and ready to float---The head will tend to act like a sail, and MAY cause some peoblems on windy days-giterdone!
 
Thanks for the feedback George. I actually had not given much though to the keel it would take to keep this one upright. I will have to work on that after I get it sealed.

I rasped, sanded and hollowed it tonight. Attached the head and put the body back together. Ill let it set a few days and the work in the neck the rest of the way set the eyes and get him dressed for the dance.




I think the correct way to say it was I used to be a cork guy...

There is something about all wood decoys I am finding apealing lately. I can see 8 decoys from where I sit all in different stages and 6 of them are wood.
 
Brandon....very nice!!! I love hoodies, and I wish we got the chance to harvest more of them...around here they are a rarity.

Getting ready to dive in on a rig of widgeon corkers here soon...well as soon as the cork gets here!

Thought you might like to see the finished product. I test floated it and it will require a 3" keel to self right. I plan to make the keel even deeper to deal with wind. Two more drakes (low heads) and a hen are in the plans for this rig.

The other morning I could not find the decoy. My son had got up early and got it down and worked up a drawing of it. I think I have a future duck fanatic on my hands.

I saw this deke in person, and Brandon knows what I think of sawbills, but Wow, very nice deke!

Thanks guys. I started layout out the pattern on some cedar tonight for the other hoodies. Would have them cut out but some of the guys at the resort invited me out fishing... Ah well its was a tough decission but the perch won out !!!
 
Brandon - Great job! If I was a hoodie and this rascal was floating, I'd lock in... Excellent work! Glad you were able to put the pattern to good use. Also great to see the kids getting involved. Keep encouraging them. Before you know it, they'll be carving gunners...
