Once in a while someone will get hurt

During the steer riding contest for the 9-12 year old bracket, the first rider had what you might call a very spirited animal. Luckily for him he was wearing a helmet and a flack jacket. When they cleared the steer out of there they called for the paramedics, who were just feet from the scene, and he was checked over. After a while, he stood up, dusted himself off and walked out of the arena. I'll check with some of the students today who were at the rodeo to see if he was all right. If that had been me I would have been buried six feet under.

Check out the young girl's expression, standing on the fence who is on the left hand side of the first picture. When you get to the last picture look at her face once again.

Great series of photos. Glad the young man was not injured and the facial expression is priceless. Being the father of several daughters I am sure she would pay money not to ever see that photo :)

Check out the young man, cowboy hat, blue shirt, hanging from the fence next to the girl with the camera.
His expression remains dead pan throughout the series of photos.
This might be proof of the, 'men are from mars and women are from venus', theory. :>)

Great photos Al.

If you look at all the faces of the young and old men you will see that your theory is correct!

Great shots Al!.....A little bull snot and bull hocky on the shirt builds character!

Also one reason I chose horses...................

Nice series. Those vests have been a great thing for riders.
I bet that girl wonders why anyone would try to ride a steer... and that little boy hanging from the railing is thinking "I could ride that steer if they would just put me on one of them instead of those little calves."

Donnie Gay would say he got some 'atmosphere' on him.

I can just imagine my daughter watching that with that same look on her face, and my boy sitting beside her saying "what? I could of rode that"

Also note that while Al shot the entire sequence, the young lady with the camera never got the viewfinder up to her eye as the whole scenario unfolded.

When a little shaver I tried this with one of my calf beef steers. Dad held the calf up against the hay bales. I climbed on and wrapped a piece of bale twine around the calf's neck. Gave my dad my best cowboy head nod and he stepped away from the calf "opening the gate" for me. I doubt I was on that calf for more than a second defore I was eating dirt. At 7 years of age I decided my career as a rodeo bull rider was complete.

Just a side note, Paul. The young rider was most fortunate to say the least. The metal cage protecting his face was broken by the hoof of the steer and another hoof glanced off the side of his neck.
On Sunday he was back to ride the steers once again and like they always do, the riders drew for what animal they were going to ride that day. Guess what? He ended up picking the same bull by the name of Hopper. He said, "No thanks!"

(He ended up picking the same bull by the name of Hopper. He said, "No thanks!")

I am glad to see that the stikes to his head and neck didn't effect his intellect. He needs a little more core and upper body strength to tackle that critter. Smart little man.

Great pics Al.
