One more introduction

Keith,
I'm working on trying to figure out how this picture posting thing works.I know you have coached me, but it will take a few practice runs. I know this will be a fun forum to be involved with, there are some familiar name here. I look forward to making new friends and talking decoys and painting.

Hi Chuck,

My book is available in two editions; the Workbook Edition and the Collectors Edition. Both books are hardcover, the workbook has a printed cover and jacket, and the collectors has a leather type cover and matching sleeve with gold foil trim and logo. The book is approx 500 pages and large size (approx 10 x 13). The Collectors Edition is signed and numbered and is limited to 500 copies. We do have a few copies of this edition still available. You can purchase the book by calling my publisher Jimmy Hunt at: 631 928 5920 in NY to make payment and shipping arrangements. If anyone on this forum who purchases a copy would like it inscribed and have a perncil remarque (my compliments) please let Jimmy know that I will do this for you, and he will tell me, and I will mail it from my studio. Let Jimmy know your favorite waterfowl species so I can make it custom for you.

Thanks again,

Keith

man keith i wish i wouldn't have missed the stuff that went down over at DCF. I kinda got the gist of John's departure...but didn't know you left as well. I'm pretty sure there is some long history behind the owner's of this forum and that one. I came to this one years ago...seems like right after a "split." These guys are all great. Eric is top notch and Steve...well... :)

My birthday is tomorrow and i've hinted to the wife for the last 6 months that i need your book (for every holiday since august) and have yet to get it ;) I went over to DCF yesterday to pull up the thread and it was gone. Lucky for me i emailed her the ordering information last september! Great to have you here. I try to keep up these days over here but just don't have the time like i used to. I certainly appreciate your talent and teaching that i know you are about to bring to this forum.

as an aside i'd also like to welcome John L as well. what a talent and a great guy that is willing to spend hours upon hours drawing up tutorials for wood hacks such as myself.

I don't remember seeing spencer on here before but saw his name pop up in his thread. You guys that aren't familiar with this kid are missing out. He's better than the majority of carvers/decoys you've laid eyes on and he's still in high school. He'll be at the top of the game before he finishes college.

glad to have you all here

Jeff Cassat

THank you John, I appreciate your comments.....I will be posting more images soon.

Hi Jeff, lets just say it got interesting over there. As you know, the DCF is a good site and has helped many carvers improve their carving/painting ability, Unfortunately the idiology among some of the forum officials didn't often make it a pleasant place for those of us who respectifully disagreed with them. But judging by the warm welcome we have received here from the membership, we should have done like you did and come here long ago.

I hope your "gift wishes" come true soon.

Thanks again,

Keith

Keith-

Yet another welcome to the forum...you've got some gorgeous birds there.

I was looking at the picture of your birds on the wall and looking at the mergansers. Two of them have "tufts" on their heads....are those carved in or did you use something else and inserted them into the heads? Neat looking birds

Dani

Thank you Dani, for your welcome and for your kind comments about my birds. Because the crests on the mergansers were going to be carved indicating the loosly arranged long feathers the wood also had to be strong. To maintain the integrity of the "look" of the mergansers, I carved the crests from a very hard wood which I collect in Costs Rica called "bulletwood" aka Manilkara bidentata. The wood is incredibly strong, carves cleanly which allows for "airy" texture to be reproduced in the crests which is important for the look of red breasted mergansers. They call it bulletwood because if you shoot a bullet into the tree, it woudn't penetrate into the tree deeper than the bark. When I cut out the head blanks (before I started carving the heads) I glued the bulletwood section to the head blank (which is tupelo) and carved the two together as if it were one piece of wood. (there is a picture of this in my book).

Thank you for asking and I hope that answers your question.

Regards,

Keith

Hey Keith welcome aboard. It's great to have you hear. For those that don't know Keith he is the greatest carver that we have these days and has challenged a lot of us to push our carving. I won't say all the great things about you that are already in the book but you will really enjoy being here and the guys are great. I have been on this site since the beginning and have a huge number of really good friends on here. Feel free to get on here and post all kinds of picture of your decoys I know these guys will love it. I'll call you soon. Stay out of trouble and get back to work. Tom welcome aboard too great to have you here. Hank

Birthday morning came and went. looks like i'll order it myself :)
I do agree that the DCF is a great resource and lucky for me i'm not part of the background crap that goes on. I just like to look for photos and tutorials for inspiration and the DCF has always had that if you read between the lines. It's a shame that we can't all "get along." but you'll like it here. Hopefully i can call your publisher this week. can't wait to get the book!

Thanks Keith....that makes sense. If I can get my hands on one of your books I'll be looking for that picture (among other things in it).
