Open water hunting

Brad Bortner added some cam cleats to his Bankes boat to enable him to hold an anchor rode tied-off quickly. I thought these were a really good idea, since they enable you to quickly control rode length out, but also enable you adjust your position in a heavy wind without pulling everything and making another pass to re-set your anchors while gunning open water. I opted to go with racelite RL-262s.

How many anchors do you carry to hunt open water? How long are your rodes?

I have three Danforth anchors in the boat. One is the primary, one for the layout and a spare ( for when I am off anchor chasing a cripple or such and something happens to the motor and I need to anchor to avoid danger).

My primary and spare anchor ropes are 75-100' 5/8" 3braid nylon with 6' chain. My layout anchor rope is 50' 3/8" braided nylon and chain.

I typically hunt in 30-40' of water.

When layout hunting I anchor the tender with a Danforth on a 50' rode. The tender also has a spare anchor on board. I use an oversize Northill on the upwind end of the layout boat with a 50' rode. On the downwind end of the layout I use a 15lb. navy anchor on a 30' rode to keep the layout from swinging.
For open water sneak hunting I only take one anchor. If I'm in the 18 foot sneak boat I use a 7lb. Pelke anchor. For the 21' sneak boat we use an 11lb. Pelke. The sneak boat anchors are also on 50' rodes. No chain anywhere. I hunt Lake St. Clair, which generally has a good-setting bottom. I rarely hunt in water deeper than 15 feet.
