Opener stories, CO's, and gun issue

Overall - a good opener. Rain mostly held off except for a very light sprinkle on Sunday just as we were about to call it a day. I guess we were pretty lucky as it rain HARD on Saturday evening and it rained most of the way home. Both days were overcast and very windy which was a good thing.

We had 3 in our group and Saturday we filled out with teal and only had teal buzz through the dekes. Nothing else. Would have been a slow day without them around. Even the other folks who were with us but hunting in different spots only got teal and all groups did well. Sunday pretty much the same as Saturday except it took us a little while longer to fill out.

As we leaving our spot on Sunday we looked over to an area that had quite a bit of shooting that morning. I got out the binoculars and saw a group of vehicles parked on a WPA with campers, tents and an Ice Castle. Grill out back and a laundry line to dry clothes. I was thinking to myself, "I sure hope a CO doesn't drive by as camping on WPA's is against Fed regulations" (or at least I thought this was the case). After we were packed up we decided we were going o do some driving around. We drove by the camping spot and sure enough, there was already a CO present. Stopped to chat after letting him know this wasn't our stuff. Asked how much trouble these guys were in and he said since it was a WPA they were in violation of a fed reg and that they were in trouble. He had them on a spotting scope and knew where they were. He took pics of everything and was just going to wait them out. I asked what kind of excuse he thought they were going to provide and he went down the list of things he had already heard over the weekend - pretty funny. So, what is going to happen to these guys - thoughts? I suppose it depends on their attitude when confronted I bet.

Had a gun issue this weekend and I don't know how worried I should be. Shot a the first duck that came in and tried to shoot at it's partner and my gun wouldn't shoot. Didn't take long to find the pin that holds in trigger assembly had fallen out and now the gun wouldn't shoot. Since no one had a spare pin, nor nail nor anything that would work, I found a tree branch I cold shove in there. That lasted one shot and my gun was back t inactive. Took out the handy dandy multi tool and cut down a spent shell and fashioned a new pin. Now I was ready to go and naturally the ducks had stopped flying by then. During this improvision time, I was searching everywhere for the pin with no luck. I bet my hunting buddies that I would find it probably as we were packing up. Want to guess what happened, yup, found it sitting less than 1 foot from where I was sitting. I swear I looked there and everywhere with no luck when the ducks were flying but as soon as we are done, the pin shows up.

So, how the heck did the pin fall out and is this something that is going to happen again? Something a gunsmith can fix or is it an expensive fix?

Pictures to come later.

Mark,

Similar thing happened to me with a Benelli 20 ga. I didn't find my pin and when I called H&K who were importing the Benellis back then the guy I talked to told me I would need the retainer tube and d-rings too. That I would most likely find that the tube through the trigger group failed at the d-ring slot, which allowed the pin to fall out. He was correct the tube had failed, he sent me the complete assembly.

So reason I shared - make sure the retainer part isn't broken. Pins should not fall out - why did it?

Good luck!

Glad you had a good opener, was it early teal season??? :)

I accidently left the pin out an a Benelli Nova I used to shoot, left it sitting on the cleaning bench.
I used a piece of bamboo for a pin, shot a limit went home, popped out the bamboo and put the original one back in!

Took the gun to a gunsmith over the lunch hour. Told him of the trouble and he immediately said bad D-Clip. Took a part the trigger assembly and found nothing wrong with the pin, the clip or anything. This is both good news and not so good news. Why did the pin fall out? Gun worked well for the most part on Saturday.

He looked it over and declared the gun to be sound and healthy. He did make a rather funny comment on how many Benelli's he sees every season with electrical tape covering the pin on each side of the receiver. Want to guess what my gun will be sporting come the next outing? Figure I can bring the gun in at the end of the season for a thorough "going over" Looks like the old 870 back up gun will be coming along for the rest of the season as well.

Never happened on my 870, really sorry you had trouble but you were able to make it work
I agree Tom, the pump gun should be the primary and the Benelli the backup...in reality it will just collect dust.

As I think about it I do have 2 spare pins in my blind bag for my 870, talk about something gathering dust! hehe I do remember others having this happen to Benellis. Oh well, lesson learned and electrical tape packed for now.

Don't be so sure the 870 pin won't fall out. Mine did, and I never found it. Purchased replacement pin from LL Bean.

Tom - That was my old gunning partners strategy. "Keeping em to clean and oiled makes parts loose..." His M1 lasted over 20 years of very hard use. Never lost a part, or knew what choke was in the gun. It did not matter. He shot, birds fell and his Chessies fetched em up. Our other gunning partner was a Benelli dealer, and gun shop owner. He would look at Jim's M1 and just shake his head.
