Oregon fishing NDR

I plan to head up to visit my son in Oregon this spring and we want to try fishing around the Portland area...he lives in Beaverton now. We have been doing some research but I wondered if any of you guys local to that area have any advice. We were thinking spinning rods and spinners in the smaller streams rather than the Willamette, Cloumbia etc. But I would like to hear from guys that actually know the area,
 
I live about an hour southwest of your boy, but there's some great fishing out here. If your looking for some spinner fishing, I'd head out to the Mt. Hood area and fish some of the streams out twards Estacada. There's also great fishing along Eagle creek, and the Wilson and Trask rivers that should fit your needs well. If you decide to switch it up a bit, some of the best warm water fishing in the state can be had along the sloughs of the Willamette and Columbia rivers, as well as Henry Hagg lake. Thats the kind of info I need Bob, thank you.

I found a couple of guides between Portland and Tillamook and asked them for information too, just for fun. Looks like spring chinook and maybe steelhead are happening in May. I also saw they fish for sturgeon on the Columbia and it sounds a lot different than the Michigan sturgeon lottery. Everything I read about that said there are "literally millions of sturgeon" which to Michigan people is like reading about shooting swans or condors.

I am looking forward to getting out on the water with him. We're just looking for the what, when and where. The Henry Hagg lake site looks like a good place to just go and kill some time...it sounds a lot like the county park system around here. We can go take a look and at least he will get a little more accustomed to the area.

Its a bitch to have your kid so far away.
 
If you haven't eaten sturgeon, you'll start throwing back those nasty salmon afterwords. My boat's real marginal for the Columbia, but on mild days, my wife and I have caught a few. They bite real soft, but are very strong. I've never had one jump, but I guess it's real impressive.
