Otter met Honker tonight

My girl is three weeks younger. It would be cool to compare notes on how there training is progressing. Ava has her moments but she is pretty good with Sit, is handling singles out to 35-40 yards (as far as i can throw a puppy bumper). Occassionally (but unintentially) a dummy will hide in plants or tall grass and she will quit if she loses site. Yesterday she actually hunted for a lost dummy. Little victories every day....
 
Otter is usually house broken... sometime knows the here command...knows release usually, and has the sit command down.

He is a spit fire. I have been gone a bunch and am behind on training...

I am just happy that I have most of my fingers left!
 
Ava has a big weekend- we just got back from the vet and her second round if shots, so she’ll get to go to the lake today. The local sportsman club is shooting clays so we’ll have a long walk and a retrieving session (from a tolerable distance) to get her accustomed to the shooting. Just trying to let her progress at her own pace. Definitely a pup that will train, but per the chessie reputation its on her terms. Lots of patience with her.
 
Excellent! ... Seems to not pay attention to is... Ever... Then ... All of a sudden... He does exactly what we want. I need to do more yard work with him.... But I am busy doing YARD WORK!
 
When I use to train chessie pups I found that their attention span was best soon as I let him out of his run. Worked best for me also as I was able to get things done after work then devote a little time to training daily. Pup looked forward to comeing out and training and was attentive. All went great for couple of years then jake figured out I couldn,t correct him from a distance and decided not to take my casts as directed. At that time I had never trained with an e collar but soon learned the value of owning one and knowing how to correct with it.
 
Otter is my 3rd Chessie... Grizzly was a great friend.... and an OK retriever.. probably performed as well as a lab...

Kodi... pretty calm, when not playing... perfect in the house. All business when there is gunpowder in the air, or wings... appropriately protective, quick learner... aside from aging, I couldn't ask for more.

Otter (14.5 weeks) is just a crazy ball of energy. I am not pushing hunting training right now as it would be pointless if he bouncing off the walls! We will see how he develops.
 
Len, training the dog for scent, I used a long bamboo pole and dragged the dummy away from me and thru high grass. Make it easy. Later drag then lift and set down wind. When the dog does well, drag pick up and throw further away down wind. It's a game for them.

I don't expect much from her right now (she's just shy of 11 weeks). It is very basic at this point with low expectations. I made the comment more to reflect on the little changes that happen daily and how quickly they can progress, and unfortunately sometimes regress. She is weeks away from anything even remotely "disciplined" . Once she has basic manners and obedience down pat, I'll start to challenge her retrieving skills a little more.
For now, I'll be content with daily advances, no matter how seemingly small they may be.
