Out of the ashes

Now that the insurance inspectors have completed their work, I've been spending some time at the site of the fire that destroyed my friends shop where we were holding the carving class. We've been salvaging anything that survived the fire (there isn't a whole lot). Recently we spent the day going through what was left of thousands of bd. feet of lumber in the storage area. All this wood had been milled from logs the owner brought in. The devastation to his building was hard to look at.
A lot of the wood was salvageable, but what we took with a front loader to the burn pile made me wince. Quite a bit of it was given away to those of us who work with wood. All through the day, I kept tossing pieces of wood that will eventually become calls into my truck.
This morning, I spent time cleaning off what I had brought home, and cutting away charred spots on the bandsaw. Some amazing wood - figured Walnut, Cherry, & curly maple with unbelievable striping....

Bob's Custom Calls,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, A hint of charcoal with every breath.

Certainly is nice that some of the wood can be salvaged.

From the pictures of the wood that you salvaged that fire had to be a real disaster. Great that you were able to recover some.

Meg got me a pair of beautiful calls from Bob. Last week was the first time I got to blow the goose call over water. I almost didn't bring it, not wanting to risk damaging such a gorgeous call. Wow I'm glad I did! It sounds better than it looks (well maybe not since I was using it), but it was so much nicer than the Big River flutes I've been using. I hope Bob keeps making these cause I'm going to keep using it.

Bob, you do good work!

Boz,
Pretty much a total loss. Still cleaning up and waiting for the insurance people to finish, so he can demolish what's left and start all over. Prtobably going back out tomorrow to help load trailers to continue haul machines to the scrapyard.
