Outboard starter trouble

The starter on my outboard doesn't engage most of the time. I turn the key and it just makes a Whizz!! sound. I figured out I can turn the starter by hand and engage it with the flywheel. Then it will start.

Any ideas? Just get a new starter? It is an old 90 hp Johnson with oil injection. I tried to find one online, but had no luck so far.

Andy ,
I had this problem on a '89 28hp Evinrude. Starter motor turned fine, but would not engage the flywheel. Bought a new "bendix" parts kit- the gear that engages the flywheel, spring, nut and washer. Cleared the problem up.

I had the same problem with a 86 28hp Johnson. I took the starter apart and cleaned it up and it works great!
I put some graphite on the bendix shaft area. If you take it apart and clean the whole thing up be careful with
the brushes. I've never seen them applied from the end of the com and they were a trick to get assembled back
in place. Good luck, John

I had a similar thing happen to me one time(and one time only)...It was in the
low 30's...the motor('89 Evinrude 25 horse) ran like a watch all day long...
just before loading on the trailer i went to start it and like you said the starter
would spin but not move forward...I took it to Evinrude dealer(I was expecting
to pay thru the nose )... the mechanic came out and told me to keep a can
of WD-40 handy...WD-40 displaces moisture, provides the lubrication etc...
he didn't charge me a dime(I did come back with 2 dozen doughnuts)...problem
has not came back since...

Where did you spray the wd-40? I am heading out tomorrow.

Andy,

Spray the shaft of the starter on both sides of the sliding gear. The gear needs to slide freely for it to engage the flywheel. It would be a good idea to hit the key a few times as you are spraying, just to help flush out crud and confirm the the gear will slide freely. Once it is sliding freely, a shot of silicone gun oil will keep it lubed.

I put off the hunting trip a day to get the issue dealt with among other things. It seems a little spray on Rem Oil did the trick. Thanks guys!

But now a plastic fitting on the fuel pump came loose. There was no clamp or anything. It seemed to be just pushed on there. I may have to glue it, but I hate to do that in case glue is not right.
