I see the Behr samples are on sale again for $1.94, with free shipping.... I have some decoys to paint, but could use some suggested colors?

Where are you picking these samples up for that price?
Thats a pretty good price to be able to try a few different colors. I just wish they'd have a few colors like burnt umber or cadmium yellow so I would have some colors to compare to.

Tim, go to homedepot.com..... the 8 oz samples are regularly ~$3, and they put them on sale regularly for $1.94, and currently showing free shipping.

is there a conversion chart for the old numbers to the new?

i have seen paint schemes based on the old Behr color numbers, not the current

Dave, are these flat paints? Have a dozen or so teal decoys that never got painted. Any one have a color chart??? Might get paint and make it a winter project... Not a great painter...

Dave , I cant paint worth a darn. My first broadbill rig was painted all Rustolium oils.I believe it was Tudor brown ,Black and white. On the hens black added to darken White to lighten. the browns ect.
The only thing I didn't like is how they scuff

Here is a list of Behr Premium Plus Ultra codes and color names for the Redheads and Ringnecks:

PPU2-3 Allure ~ Redhead Drake - head

PPU3-18 Artisan ~ Redhead Drake, Hen – head highlights

PPU5-2 Aging Barrel ~ Ringneck Hen - body
PPU5-4 Mocha Latte ~ Redhead Hen – body

PPU7-7 Riviera Beach ~ RH and RN Hens – sides, etc

PPU18-4 Dark Pewter ~ Bills on all (brighten with White as needed)

PPU18-5 French Silver ~ Redhead speculum, RN drake sides
PPU18-14 Cathedral Gray ~ Redhead drake sides and back
PPU18-16 Elephant Skin ~ Redhead drake back
PPU18-19 Intellectual ~ Wings on all

As you can see, I like the PPU18 series. These can be used on many (most?) other species – so, good to have on hand in the shop – along with Black and White.

Although I painted a few burlapped Model 72 Redheads a year or so ago, I never did photograph them. Here are some live birds from a couple of springs ago. Obviously, the Drake's head can be done in any number of colors. They are a bit rosier than Canvasback heads – but I selected Allure to serve both species.

Black%20Duck%20Foamer%20053_zpsmf1ds5ak.jpg

I painted these 72s as Ringnecks – then burlapped them and returned them to Broadbill status (not many Ringnecks up here). The backs on the Drakes can certainly be done with plain Black. I like “Intellectual” because it is very similar to herter's old Wing Gray.

Finally, anyone could get by with many fewer Greys - but @ $1.94.......

Hope this helps!

Steve- not to be a pain- but is there a similar list for puddlers ?

especially Mallards and Woodies

Thank you Steve.
Do you think ECC-51-3 Hidden Forest for a Goldeneye or Common Merg head? Or maybe something lighter like 470D-7 Windy Pine? It's really hard figuring out shades on a computer screen.

For black and white I'd assume Pure White and Jet Black would work?

Tim~

I use PASTORAL - PPU10-20 - as my base green. But, I almost always blend it darker and lighter to give the illusion of iridescence.

On Whistlers and Shelldrake I paint the whole head Black then blend the Pastoral (green) onto the cheek, brow and along the neck. Then, I add highlights (a much smal;ler area) with tube acrylics: first Chomium xide Green then the same Green with a bunch of Cadmium Yellow added.

And, I keep in mind that for the first hunfred or so years, Lamp Black was enough for the heads on these 2 drakes.....

Hope this helps,

SJS

Thanks again Steve. Maybe I'll just do the black and highlight with acrylics if I feel it's needed.

Tim

Steve, you are so very helpful! Thank you... I will start compiling this info from each of you posts and build a spreadsheet.... once I have it compiled, I will post and send it out.

Thanks

Good morning, Dave~

Here is an update for your spreadsheet.

I am re-painting my E Allen Black Ducks - having coated them with epoxy + sawdust (post to follow in a week or so) to give a rougher surface - to minimize shine. Although I love the FME Black Duck Body (#3) from Lou Tisch, (http://www.lockstockbarrell.com/PDF-08/LSB-FME-140121.pdf ) I wanted to try latex. So, here's what I use for Black Ducks in the Behr Ultra line:

BODY ~ Espresso Beans PPU5-1

FACE, TERTIALS ~ Mocha Latte PPU5-4

BILL ~ Curry Powder PPU6-1

All the best,

SJS
