Paint?

I stripped out my boat and now Im ready for paint and carpet! I called around and found paint for about $70 a gallon. After taking benches out and moving them i have bare metal showing, can i use rust oleum aluminum etching primer in a can to cover these spots before painting? Also is there cheaper paint i buy to paint the boat?

I would use Lou Tish's LME from Lock Stock and Barrell... He is on this site... I don't think his paint is cheaper... but it is MUCH better!
 
If you have bare aluminum get some of lou's AG primer to use before the FME. Great part about ordering from Lou is he gives you all the information you need for using the product and is always willing to answer questions.

As long as you are at this point already, I'd suggest one more step before paint and carpet. I would pull up the floor and check the condition of the flotation foam below it. If needed, now would be the time to replace or add more, if you find there are voids or if the present foam has deteriorated.

Just a note for you and anyone doing a boat. Do NOT use the RustOleum Self Etching Primer (SEP) unless you are going to use it exactly as they recommend. I just had a customer who had a bad experience with that SEP. As a result of the problem the customer had, I contacted the RustOleum rep through our paint factory (talked with him personally) and found that the SEP is to be used ONLY on bare metal, aluminum or fiberglass (after proper prep & sanding). It is NEVER to be used on a painted surface. It is NOT designed to stick to paint and will not stick properly and anything put over it can crinkle the paint as it dries. It also has a very high solvent load: acetone, zylene and toluene. The solvents are great as cleaners and strippers but you have to be careful over any paint...nice stripper at times.
