Painting Mallard Hen Decoy - Having Problems

I am a better carver than I am a painter. I have carved a set of mallard decoys and have the drakes painted already. I have panted a few mallard hens but am not really happy with the results.

I would like to repaint the hens.

Does anyone on this forum have pictures of a very simple paint scheme that would be suitable for a mallard hen.

If you carve a dozen and then paint them one at a time the 12th one will be the one you like. repaint 1 through 11 and you be a pro at it.

What I'd really like to see is a tutorial on painting a hen Mallard using a 3 inch brush. That's about all I'm good for. [w00t]

I have been doing something similar, if you remember Bob Ross, he painted with large brushes his work was great. I shake too much to use "strokes" like Steve does so i use less paint and "dab" over a solid back ground. Works pretty good for 20 yard gunners.

Just paint them as black ducks . . . .

Took a class this summer about painting the Hen Mallard from Pat Godin, ended up with this when the class was finished.

We spent 8 days painting from 9 a.m. to 9 - 10 p.m., I have 30 pages of notes,
basically it is Raw Umber, Burnt Umber, Raw Sienna with a little Black and White to lighten and darken. Orange on the bill, Blue, White, and Black on the speculum.
Paint her dark on top and a bit lighter on the sides it will work.
