Painting my outboard motor

Was thinking of painting my 50hp Yamaha this year. I don't want to spend the money and time on Camoclad and I'm sick of using the codura cover. Anyone have any experience? I want the paint to stick if possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Want to go over the decals? I rough it up completely with about 220 sand paper, then wipe down with laquer thinner and paint. Main thing is to get all oil off.

I have painted a couple motors both outboards as well as mud motors....First thing is to power wash the motor. I have applied Engine Brite to the greasy areas with great sucess. Wipe down the motor with lacquer thinner prior to painting. Mask off the areas you want to protect and paint...I have only used Lou's FME on all of my boats and motors and honestly, wouldn't use anything else. After you are done, let the motor sit in the bright sun for a week or so...that paint will turn into stone.

Mark, An old dirt bike trick is to duct tape everything and then paint that. In a few years or thousand miles of exposure the tape will fray and look really good. Or just shake the can and let er rip. Seriously though a pressure wash doesn't hurt pre paint. I am working on a gihle suit for my 25.
