Painting the hull, pictures and questions

After testing a sprayer that my wife found in the basement(didnt know I had one)on some scrap wood, I decided to roll on the paint with a foam roller. I used FME#28"Dead Grass Green" Thanks Lou.! I sanded the hull with 120 grit paper and wiped it off with a Tack rag. Then I put on a very thin coat of FME #28 ,you can almost see the wood through the paint.

How long do I have to wait between coats? Should I sand between coats? I have one spot that I can see the roller line that I would like to sand.

Lookin' good partner.
Give it overnight to dry but do not leave it outside for condensation to form on it. That will retard the curing and can weaken the bond. Painting early in the day and allowing the whole day in the warmth to dry/cure is the best way to run.
You do not need to sand between coats but if you want to even some areas out.....go ahead, sand, blow/vacuum it off, tack rag it again and the........rock with the paint.

No, I was very happy with the painted hull,kind of "old school" looking. But, I would like to build a boat someday that has a clear finish.
 
I have already been dreaming of a cedar boat with a clear finish or a BBSB with all brass hardware and a sail.

BTW if its not to late I would order brass hardware for your boat. I went with stainless that I will paint over but after seeing the brass screws on my deck I think they would look nice as hardware and not shine which was my origional concern.
 
Brandon, I dont think that the brass will hold up very well in the salt marsh. But then again, what do I know:)



Funny how we assume our hunting conditions are the conditions for everyone else. Probably correct with that I would not know since I have never hunted the salt. The great lakes have a few divers though...

I was on a commercial fish boat in Alaska for several years and all the hinges and fittings for doors and hatches were brass, or where they bronze?
 
I think he meant bronze fittings. Brass will corrode some depending on the zinc content, but silicon bronze is as close to bullet proof as you can get in salt water.
 
As I was typing, I knew brass didn't sound right. I has been a long day of work. The BRONZE fittings on the boat where constantly subjected to salt water and didn't show much sign of wear. We washed them with soap and salt water, much cleaner than fish slime.
 
Yep I did mean Bronze. I thought of it when I was out sanding for a few hours tonight.

time for bed so I can do it again tomorrow night. wahooooooo..... (bit slap happy)
 
You guys are making me envious! I have fallen a little behind due to work and travel. I have all my epoxy on and just need to scuff it up to accept the paint. I'm planning on spraying the FME #28 Dead Grass Green on.

Charlie - How many coats did you end up putting on? Looking Great!

Brandon - Dude! You need to get some sleep. Really. Eat something too. Then again if you don't eat then you won't have to stop to use the bathroom. Its really looking great!
 
Expensive automotive type paints are meant to be recoated wet on wet. Anything else should be applied no later than 4 PM (I worked in a boat yard when I was a kid). Then you need to scuff the previous coat for good adhesion (I prefer pads to sandpaper) before next coat.
