Parker's first deer!!!

Thought you all would enjoy this, but obviously not as much as me! Parker and I went up to Kentucky for the youth gun hunt this weekend. Not expecting much, maybe a chance at a doe. He had shot his 7mm-08 a few times and I felt comfortable with a 150 yd shot or so. Long story short, we had two nice bucks come out about 150 yards away. They fed towards us in the cut corn field and finally the larger buck turned broadside and presented a shot at 60 yds or so. Parker had him in the scope, I had him take a few deep breaths and sqeeze the trigger when he was on him! The buck gave a little kick back and slowly walked into the woods. I'm thinking not a good hit!!!! We waited an hour and went looking for blood in the corn field-nothing! We slowly went into the wood trail and finally found a good spot of frothy blood! Whew, lung shot I hope. Well, 100 yds into the woods one drop of blood at a time, we found him. Big 6!! His shot entered perfect behind the shoulder but didn't exit him. Big bodied deer, maybe 225 on the hoof! We are still excited!! Thank you LORD!!

Thanks for reading!

Congrats Parker and great shot.Great memory for you both.

PS...I love the 7mm-08 .Im surprised it ran that far.I've shot everything from coyotes to a moose with it and only 1 whitetail didn't drop in its tracks.

Best

Great deer and great story! Must have been a bit exciting for you!

7mm-08 is a great round, great for a kid and great for me too. I've never had a deer run out of sight shot with mine and I've killed over a dozen deer with it in the past few years from 4-150 yards. Shooting Barnes TSX 120s is a very nice round from what I've seen on deer. I've always had pass through even breaking bone in and out.

Bob,

Although I hear that moose come down pretty easily, that is a lot of animal! I'm planning on using my 7mm-08 for caribou next fall. What bullet did you use for moose? I was planning the 120 barnes tsx, I've had very good luck with them and they have a good track record from what I read on caribou.

Hey Tod
The outfitter told me I couldn't use my 7mm-08 when I got there. He said it was to light and I should use something in the 300 Win mag range.I happen to bring a 300Win for a back up but it is way too heavy to carry around all day.I insisted I shoot my 08 better and he reluctantly agreed I could use it.
He was standing two feet from me when the the bull came out.He whispered "he's a 166 yards" BANG!You could hear the 140 grain Nosler Partion hit just behind the shoulder and he dropped instantly.
He just said Holy Sh**!I said you want to buy a 7mm-08 now don't you ?LOL.

Way to go Parker!!!!! Good job!! Thanks for sharing the moment and picture,it is great to see other dads doing the youth hunt, Congrats to the both of you,Brian

Way to go, Parker. Great looking buck. You and your dad will be excited for years to come when you think of that moment.

4 yards?
why didn't you save the bullet and noise and get him with your knife ??
LOL

I overheard you talking to Robbie about a good taxidermist. I know of one in Sumter County, but that's a long way off. Congratulations to all three of you -- father, son, and deer!

Grace and peace amigo!

An interesting aside and safety tip... I was sitting on the ground on the face of a rock outcrop and the 4 yard deer came from behind me with a second buck and doe. I was waiting for the deer as it came around the rock face and my barrel was parallel to the rock face and about 12-18" from it. Rang my ear with the blast off the rock and it has never stopped ringing since that day about 5 years ago (I think 2009). Hard to forget that shot. I'm glad the 7mm-08 is a quiet gun and now I'm a convert to ear protection. My ears would always ring at the end of the duck season and it would go away in the spring, that time it stayed. I always knew the risk and now I experience the down side, so listen up kids....

Huh, couldn't hear you! Todd, I have had the lost hearing problem for years. Here is the way to look at it - get your kids protected so they don't have the problem later in life, protect what you have left, and then use your "handicap" to its best advantage - what did you say honey? didn't hear you on that! Can't go to your sister's house for dinner, I'm meeting so and so to shoot afternoon ducks! hehehe

Trip.

Unfortunately my hearing isn't reduced, I just have the ringing :).
