Pelee Island hunt

This was our third year going to the Island. I heard there was only 250 hunters on the Island. There were birds every where but lots of beans were still up making things interesting. We ended up with 50 birds. I imagine the second and third hunts will be awsome. We had to stay an extra day due to weather and with the ferry running aground the week before I bet there not taking any chances. If you've never been on one of these hunts I would highly recomend it.

Congratulations, Rich, and to the rest of your crew. Heck from those beautiful shots that you took of all those pheasants, I think Pelee Island is trying to give South Dakota a run for their money when it comes to birds per acre!

I've never been to South Dakota, but I think your right Al this place is crawling with birds and is very hunter friendly. A licence cost $200.00 this money goes towards the locals property taxes. The whole Island is fair game except for standing crops. The whole hunt cost me less than $500.00 including food, acomidations, booze, licence and gas. Thats pretty tuff to beat and we were'nt roughing it.

Thanks for your post Rich. It reminds me of several hunts I have enjoyed there over the years. Only place I've been in Canada where there is a Welcome Hunters sign hanging on the City Hall!
It's amazing how the pheasants are all over the place, including the campground, before opening day for the first hunt.
Another interesting option is the one of clean-up hunts after the first 3 main hunts. Still lots of birds around, not many hunters, but most of the accomodations and services are closed by then. Need to find a good B&B or a cottage rental. And the weather can make the ferry schedule iffy.

Thats pretty cool. Good eats too.
Can you duck hunt around the island too?

We have seen plenty of divers around the island when we have been hunting there. However we didn't have a boat, non-toxic shot, or our migratory permits with us.
Since you can only hunt pheasant on certain days, duck hunting would need to be done on alternate days. You may want to check with the township office whether there are any restrictions on waterfowling around when the pheasant hunts are going on.
Have seen some grassed up blinds in the yards of some of the locals, so there may be puddler action too .
