PHOTO-BUCKET users BEWARE........

seems that photobuket users are experiencing issues with a nasty virus that attaches itself to your pictures when you "upload" to your account......if you never "download" your pictures from the PhotoBucket site then you are apparantely okay....if you do download either your computer, or the computer that you send a photo to that opens it will be infected with the virus called "Internet Security 2010" which attacks and shuts down any security/malware software that you have installed, (including at least the most recently updated McAffe), and corrupts your computer......at least one person that I read that had it stated that once he got the virus his computer was flooded with "porn popups", (no doubt Derek is presently downloading photos from photobucket as fast as his little maincured fingers can hit the command functions)....

I understand its a particularly nasty little bastard and hard to clean up......

I haven't had to do this but I'm told that "this" is the "fix".......

http://www.geekpolice.net/malware-re...ide-t16909.htm

I'm not vouching for the absolute correctness of the either the problem or the fix and am just passing the information along....

I did ask one source if it was "safe" to continue to upload to PhotoBucket and then only "link" pictures to there and was told ..... "as far as I know"......sooooo.....LINK don't DOWNLOAD back to your computer to store or to someone elses computer.......

Here is some more info on that photobucket virus for what it is worth. This was posted on another forum. The guy that posted it does my web hosting and tech work for me. I'm not saying to forget about the threat, just be very cautious.

I say bogus

Photobucket is so heavily prepared for this type of thing, that they would have shut down their servers until it was fixed, and gave a huge public statement on their site regarding it. Not to mention file lawsuits against the IP address that uploaded it.

Dont think for a minute that every action taken on the server by every person logging in isnt getting get recorded.

Plus...Internet Security 2010 is a virus that disguises itself as an antivirus program, alerting you of a virus on your computer, and tricking you into buying it to remove the virus. In actuality, your buying the virus and inviting it in.

Internet Security 2010 is for real, it is a real virus, and it's real dangerous. But it's not coming from nor is it contagious through downloaded photobucket pics.

Yes , Ive noted that my security has blocked several attempts by viruses on photo bucket . I use Kaspersky Anti Virus, That Mcafee is light weight junk , I stopped using it last year and am very happy I did.

My computer had it last week and I didn't know where it came from, but the "Internet Security" and never-ending porn pop-ups sounds like the one. Our computer guy said it was a tough one to get rid of but he apparently was successful.

I had it day after new year. Bad virus!!!!! Here is the most recommended removal tool for getting rid of it. worked for me, but was tough to do.

I had one very similar to this a few months ago. I had a pop up that told me I needed to update my malware and the logo was just like real one. I clicked on it and it told me I had viruses and to click on a link which was malware...something or other to fix it. And of course I did and the next thing you know I'm in the tunnel scene in Willy Wonka with porn pop-ups. Kind of exciting really...gave me an idea for an adult amusement park ride but it was a bitch to clean up for sure.

I use Google Chrome for a browser, Zone Alarm fire wall (free version) and malware bytes to clean up anything that makes it through those first two.

I have never had to bring anything off of photo-bucket, but since I have shared albums with people I am wondering if they downloaded a photo and caught something.

I got the Malware thingy on my laptop too! I downloaded Malware bytes from my work computer and tried to run it on the affected computer, but it simply froze. A friend offered to remove all the data I have and re-install Windows, but I'm afraid I'd lose all my iTunes. If anyone has had a similar situation, I would appreciate knowing whether or not it is possible to save iTunes!

Thanks!

Anthony

I don't know if its the same virus currently residing in my wifes' laptop but this one says you have a virus and for 55 bucks it will clear it up. Unfortunatly, its just a scam, you send the money (she didn't) and nothing happens except you give a credit card number to the crooks. She cannot get rid of it as it has blocked access to the web, making it impossible to download any type of fix. Seems to me that if the originators of the scam are asking for money and have an address to send it to, someone in law enforcement should be able to do something about these people, or am I wrong?

Anthony, my itunes are still good after using malwarebytes to clean it up. What you have to do is start up computer in safe mode, start malwarebytes before the virus can start up, then let it run. takes a while. then you have to run it a couple of times more to make it completely clean. Then back up itunes to a external hardrive.

porn pop-ups are a bad thing???? :)

thousands of them at once and they fill up your RAM or cache file so fast that you can't enjoy them.

My buddy had some adware once that popped up nothing but guy on guy and trans stuff. It was his wife's laptop and they were both wondering about how the spammer chose to market her with this content.

Eventually they found that she had at one time accessed someone's open Wi-Fi home router while working in her car and that was the IP address that the spammer had used and since she was connected to the open router at the time she got tagged. Some time later she must have gotten connected again to the same or a similar non firewalled home router and the adware unleshed the torrent of popups.

These days of high capacity storage I dont understand the need for photobucket. Just store the darn pictures on a SD card or a drive stick. Then your not at the mercy of an outsider controlling your pictures or files.

As far as those guys they send a pop up that says your infected and for $$$ they will fix the problem they are usually the virus. They're Scum bags! Dont know who you can turn them into but sure wish they would get theres!

Thanks for the heads up Steve. Unfortunately, it appears too late for me. My computer has been going haywire for a couple of weeks now and I couldn't figure out why. Now that you mentioned PhotoBucket, I remember going there to check out some pics I was told about. That's what you get for looking at loose women's goods on the internet. My Norton 360 is fighting back, but I am not confident it will succeed. Thanks again.

have you tried "resetting it" to a date prior to when the problem started? If you can do that you may solve you're problem.....

Start

Control Panel

Maintenance

System Restore

enter date PRIOR to problem starting....

COULDN'T HURT.....

it has nothing to do with that... I have terabytes of storage... but it doesn't make it simple to share... or POST on this web site.

storage site like PHOTO-BUCKET beat hellout of resizing a picture from your own storage to match the upper limit of the photo posting capability....

So like Phil says....its not about storage.....its about "quality of photo" and "ease of posting"......

I don't STORE on Photobucket...I upload ONLY the pictures I want to link to this site.....and I never download to anyone else's computer......

Steve

Its easy to resize from your own storage, PAINT is just one program that can be used to resize. I guess I just dont trust other sites for this very reason of viruses etc.

Steve,

I tried it without success. No prompt to enter a date. But...... my Norton 360 seeems to be cleaning things up and I am operational currently. We'll see. Thanks again.
