Picked up our DP's at the factory...

My brother and I picked up our Fatboy DP's yesterday at the builders shop in MO and they are nice. After seeing the 4Rivers side by side with his DP, my brother had a bit of buyers remorse and thought he liked the 4Rivers more then the DP. The guys at the factory seem to know the fiberglass business pretty well, and were talking about a new molding process to make boats even lighter and stronger than they are now. I'm going to get mine in the water this weekend, even tho the weather isn't great in North Iowa right now.

Curt,

I'm sure your gonna like your DP. I've got an orginal FATBOY and really like it.

Where abouts in Iowa are you at?

Jeff

Yeah, Curt. I do mostly hunt Big Marsh. I also hunt Sweets Marsh. If things work out like I hope, I plan to start hunting the Mississippi some too.

My son in law's parents have a cabin over by Lansing, and he wants to duck hunt over there, but
doesn't know the area at all. Is the hunting any good in that area?

Curt, why did your brother like the 4 Rivers better ? was it the size or quality just curious

Curt,

are you referring to the DP when you said, "The guys at the factory seem to know the fiberglass business pretty well, and were talking about a new molding process to make boats even lighter and stronger than they are now." if so, how much will the new DP weight compared to the old? thanks.

It was the larger cockpit that he liked,he plans to use his boat for fishing with his daughter. The workmanship on the boats is identical since they are made in the same shop. I'm sure he will like his DP just fine. We didn't get to see these boats first hand before we bought them, we were relying on owner testimony.

They were talking about some kind of press mold or something that they were experimenting with,...they wouldn't get to specific about it. I don't know if they are actually going to use it for boats, they mfg. other fiberglass products there as well.

Curt,

which company is working on a new press mold, Momarsh or Four Rivers? thanks.

Kitco builds both brand of boats,I don't know who owns the tooling or the molds. They are both nice boats,I don't see how you could improve them with a 2 sided mold,......but I know nothing about fiberglass fabrication.

Curt, you guys let me know how you like them once you get them in the water! Tell Kendall, he will have plenty of room to fish 2 out of the DP comfortably. The cockpit on the DP and the 2 man 4 rivers is the same size, just that the 4-riv is more square.

As far as building techniques, materials, etc. go we have talked about trying a different molding process for many years. As of yet, neither 4 rivers or MOmarsh boats have been made the new way as there are some unknowns and definite up front capitol improvemnet costs that are significant.

Kitco is the fiberglass fabrication company that now builds both boats. They do a great job as far as quality is concerned. For those of you that have paid attention over the years, you will notice that many design features and options have become "similar" with both brands. There are still differences too. The 4 rivers guys are friends of mine, but are not duck hunters at all. I guess things always trickle down, you could say.

Both brands are high quality products, both are better products than they were years ago, IMO. It is mainly the hows and whys that still make them different!

Ira, Kendall will be fine with the DP,after doing the research on the various boats,I was sold on the DP,and am confident it will be great for what we will use them for. He was still leaning toward a small jon boat or a canoe, but I talked him into the DP. We wanted duck boats that we could car-top on our SUV's,launch at canoe put-ins or in a road ditch under a bridge, paddle, push pole, or drag through a shallow marsh, and fish small ponds. The 4riv 2 man looks more like a conventional open boat or a kara style, which probably makes it more attractive to some. The DP is unique, and you have to "think outside the box" to realize its potential. I'm going to paddle it around the pond this Sat.,....I'll give a report. Curt

Curt,

I have a fatboy original and love it. Nice low profile, super stable and comfortable. Went back and forth on the DP vs Orig for a while. Having used mine for a season I'll tell you that they paddle fine for short distances, but if that is your main means of propulsion, and it's not a relatively short paddle, I would consider a small motor. I have a 46lb thrust trolling motor that pushes it just fine, but I hate the weight. I'm considering picking up a little 3hp. There's one in the classifieds now, you may want to have a look. Enjoy the new boats.

I won't be going far with my boat. The main objective with this boat was to keep things simple, light and highly mobil. If I hunt where I need to make a long run,and need a layout boat,I'll tow the DP in with the 1860 Pro Drive.
We have enough different styles of boats now that we are going to be highly adaptable,..........kind of like a duck.
