Pie anyone?

Last night of archery league tomorrow night so it's time for another of "Mom's Apple Pie". Mom's gone now but I know how to make it. In her later years she started using a deep dish pizza pan so she would only have to make one pie. This pan is a 14" deep dish pan.

Prebake - weight 10.2 lbs. I used 14 large Granny Smith apples.

Right out of the oven - no, it's not burnt, that's carmelized sugar.

Of course there is always some pie dough left over. What better use than cinnamon/nutmeg/sugar Pie Crust Pinwheels for the granddaughters.

I think Mom would approve.

Steve,

Back in about 2000 or 2001 I took one of these pies that my mother made to South Dakota when we hunted with John M.(?). Everyone was stuffed and crashed on the couch after a dinner of Duck-in-the-Rue groaning "I can't eat another bite" ....................until I brought the pie out. We didn't the whole thing that night but put a huge dent in it. They are always a big hit.

That's what they all say....................until they get the bill haha. Actually, I have been chief cook and bottle washer at a number of hunting camps going back to 1967, the year my Dad died. He had held the job so it was natural for me to take over. Deer camp in 1967 was 9 days long. We had 6 guys and all the food was made in camp, nothing ahead of time. Total bill for the food was $9.63/person and we ate good - beef roast, boiled dinner, pork roast with 'kraut even did a turkey one year - all on the coleman stove or the top of the wood stove.

Nice Pete. Good to see a man that can butcher an elk, build a boat and make a pie. I'm not surprised.

I always know it's spring when I start seeing fresh Rhubarb. Got the stuff yesterday and I'm making a Strawberry/Rhubarb pie this eve. I know I'll enjoy it as much as you enjoy making mom's apple pie. True comfort food........

Alex,

Just regular Crisco. Sometimes I'll substitute 1/4 to 1/3 butter when I want a smaller crumb but I really like the flakes that I get from all Crisco. Never have used lard though I tell myself I should do it - despite what my doctor might say. I have used mostly butter before but the crust comes out more like a butter cookie than a pie crust.

Pete,

How ironic. My mother always made extra pie crust in order to make those cinnamon rolls we loved so much. Mum passed away 5 months ago but the legacy lives. My sister just arrived to celebrate my 63rd and what does she bring - you guessed it, mums favorite cinnamon rolls. They are the best. And that pie - holly sh## what a thing of beauty !

Dang that looks good!
I love making simple fruit pies, just fruit, a little sugar, a little butter and a little cinnamon in a simple crust. Hard to mess it up.
I've got a pile of blueberries vaccuum packed from last year, may have to make a pie for Easter.

Wow Pete, That looks like a 40 mph pie;<)). How ya doin? Start a Poleboat yet? Sounds like a pie gauntlet has been tossed for LaCross, Waahooo. Spring is here, open water and no coat.
