Pintail back feathers

I will happily trade some flies, or at the very least, pay postage, for these feathers from a pintail's back. There aren't many of them. They are for a specific fly I tie for landlocked salmon.

Looks like they would be good for a smelt or similar pattern...you want just the 4/5 pointed ones, or as they get more rounded will that work also?
 
Just the pointed ones, Rick. I have a pretty good supply of the more rounded flank feathers. They are for a fly called the Counterfeiter, designed by Bob Veverka.

If I get one, and that's about how many I get a season: one, I will be happy to send them to you!
 
Gary--if you're tying what I think you are--my favorite spring streamer. I used to be able to buy the right pintail feathers, but since I rarely see a pintail, I've been tying mine with mallard or teal for years. They fish just fine, but they don't look nearly as good.
 
Pearl body, or silver? Pearl fishes better, IMHO, but silver was the original. Assuming we are talking about the same fly, that is.
 
Give me a couple weeks and I might be able to get you some feathers.
My son and I picked one nice drake last weekend. I see the feathers you want. I can hit up my buddies too.



 
Perfect photo of those tail coverts (or whatever they're called) that I'm looking for. The very last feathers before the actual tail feathers.

Great looking flies! I bet our striped bass would smash those. We use 7" super flukes here in SC for topwater feeding fish and they crush 'em.

I'll see what I can round up for you.
 
I will have to look into superflukes! There is an out-of-control (in everyone's opinion except the Dept. of Fisheries and Oceans) striper population literally exploding on the Northwest Miramichi River in New Brunswick. Most folks are using deceiver-style flies there. It is not uncommon at all to hook 3-400 fish per day when they are coming into the river to spawn.

That fly will catch fish feeding on smelts. The purple is key. Lots of purple on spawning smelts in spring. A pink variation would work, too, a little bit later post spawn as the colors fade, and to give dark day/dark fly and light day/light fly alternatives.

Very nice looking fly.
