planning hull vs displacment hull

The bottom of a displacment hull from bow to stern would look like a banana were most of the hull rides midships very easy to paddle . no speed with motor . planning hulls runs flat to the stern a little harder to paddle but if you want to run a motor your speed will dictate by the hp you use . not so with a displacment.

Paul,

Here is a one of a kind... The former owner bought this older displacement hull and added a wedge to the aft section to allow the boat to plane with a 15hp merc.

The biggest difference is what time you set your alarm for on hunt mornings. Planing hull = normal time displacement = real early.

Planing hulls run "up on plane", in other words, when you are "on plane" only the back of the boat & foot of the motor are in the water. This give much greater speed.
Displacement hull will only run as fast as the "hull speed" allows (6-9 mph??), add more power, and all it will do is squat at the stern. They may be slow, but they have great rough water handling.

I got out yesterday for a scouting run on the Potomac, and to gain some experience in my sneakbox while the water/weather is not yet life threatening. It was windy and choppy, so I got to play. I have a displacement hull, and am running a 15hp SS Johnson on it. Max speed I have seen on GPS is 13MPH. But she sure was stable. At one time I was heading up river with the wind making 13mph, and a big cruiser passed me. Eventually his large wake over took me from the starboard rear, and I got to surf some waves... it was fun. I was running standing at the dodger, right hand on the frame, left on the tiller extension, it was a fun ride, not unstable.... though when I turned around and headed into the wind and the chop I sat on the back deck... Never felt unsafe, and never felt any flex in the hull. Rock solid... bow always up, very pleased with the seaworthyness of this box. I am thinking about adding a handle to the dodger frame that might be more comfortable to hold on to, gripping the canvas/frame was a wierd angle on the wrist....

Did not see much for birds...a big raft of coot, some grebes and some Canada geese.... and Cormorants! no ducks where I was looking, though the weeds were bad and I had to stop often to clear the prop. I was running with a dolfin on the OB, took it off last evening, thinking it might be grabing more weeds than it is worth? Only gained 1-2mph with it on but have not done a realtime comparision so each time out the conditions are different. Need to take it along with the tools to install it next trip perhaps?

Anyone have experience does it add to the weed collection or not?

Dave
