Portable Capstan Winches

Pete,

Not surprising but I'm confused. It's portable but it has to mount to something to work, based on the "equal and opposite" laws of physics. Is the cable to loop around a tree? What prevents the capstan from twisting out of position? How fast does it pull under load? These are the first quick questions I would need answered before even thinking about getting one.

I'm looking forward to finding out what others know of these tools.

Cool rig Pete. I dont know a thing about that one but the idea works great hauling Lobster traps out of the deep water.

Pete, I have one of the winches, it is mounted on a stihl chainsaw motor, you just remove the bar and bolt on the drum, it works very well.

We bought ours to use for search and rescue work, I have used it for several body recoveries out of deep canyons and to get a couple snowmobiles un stuck, it has worked very well, with the right rope you could drag a whole moose with the thing.

Fred,

What size is your saw? I have a Stihl 038 and I assume that would be big enough. Does the rig seem rugged and well made? Really wasn't planning on spending that kind of money but I know what packing an elk means to my body - I'm getting sore just thinking about putting a moose on my back.

I have elk hunted in Colorado with my uncle and it seemed every year he would shoot a bull as far as he chould from a road or the truck. We would spend all day humping elk quaters up and back down the moutain not fun. One of those would have been great. If you don't get one you will wish you did with a moose. Good luck

I have done several moose recoveries with a block and tackle and a mile of rope. (only a slight exaggeration) One of those would have been great.

The price pales in comparison to all the other costs involved in moose hunting. I hate to think what I have spent in the last 30 years.

I originally bought one for elk hunting. I ended up using it more for retrieving my drift boat up steep river banks and onto its trailer. It was a slick little tool for that. Unfortunately I never got a chance to use it on an elk before I got rid of it.

I would suggest double braid polyester rope to go with it. (for the high strength to diameter ratio)
