Decent electronic muffs have come down in price. I paid close to 200 dollars for a pair several years ago. This winter I purchased a set for under 50 dollars and have been happy with them. I use this set at work. I can't recall off the top of my head the name brand but I purchased them at FarmFleet. As has been stated, one can actually hear better than normal hearing while also getting the benefits of protection.
They do take a bit to get used to. Sometimes hoods and other headgear won't work well when wearing the muffs.
